Chapter 6 - THE SHADOW OF HELENA’S ALLIES

The evening shadows lengthened across the manicured lawns of the Whitaker estate, casting long, skeletal fingers over the grand neo-classical pillars that framed the entrance. Inside the mahogany-paneled library, Helena sat regally behind her late husband’s executive desk, her posture rigid despite her recent release on a heavily restricted technical bail.
Across from her sat Marcus Vance, Arthur’s estranged younger brother and a ruthless corporate defense attorney known for handling the city's most dangerous white-collar criminals.
"Your son was an absolute fool, Helena," Marcus said, swirling a glass of neat Scotch as he stared coldly across the room. "He left a paper trail wide enough for a federal convoy to drive through. And now Clara is sitting in the primary trustee seat controlling seventy percent of the remaining liquid capital."
Helena narrowed her eyes, her lips pressing into a thin, hard line of pure fury. "Clara is a non-entity. She is a charity case we pulled out of a suburban duplex six years ago. She has no stomach for actual corporate warfare; she only won because Elias tipped her off with federal resources."
"That 'non-entity' just handed the DOJ three additional shell companies registered under your maiden name," Marcus replied, leaning forward and slamming a thick dossier onto the polished desk. "If she testifies at the preliminary hearing next Tuesday, the judge won't just deny bail—he’ll lock you away in a maximum-security facility before the trial even begins."
"Then she needs to be neutralized before Tuesday morning," Helena whispered, her voice dropping to a dangerous, icy register that sent a shiver through the quiet room.
Marcus raised an eyebrow, a slow, predatory smile spreading across his thin lips. "Neutralized how, Helena? You don't have access to your offshore funds anymore. Every transaction you make is being monitored by federal forensic accountants."
"I don't need funds to handle a fragile girl who spent six years crying in my hallway," Helena said, reaching into her designer handbag and sliding a heavy velvet jewelry pouch across the mahogany desk. "Take this diamond brooch. Sell it through your underground contacts in the warehouse district. Find someone who knows how to make a federal witness disappear before she can open her mouth in court."

Marcus picked up the heavy velvet pouch, feeling the cold weight of the stones inside before sliding it smoothly into his inner coat pocket. "Consider it handled, Helena. By Monday night, Clara won't be talking to any federal judge."
What Helena and Marcus failed to realize, however, as they plotted in the dark of the Whitaker library, was that every word of their conspiracy was currently streaming in high fidelity directly to a secure recording server sitting on my brother Elias's desk three miles away.
