Chapter 6 - The Corporate Trap And The Boardroom Betrayal*

By Monday morning, the penthouse had transformed into an operational fortress. Raymond at the front desk had strict orders: no unauthorized visitors, no exceptions, and specifically, any man matching Marcus’s description was to be intercepted by private security before he even stepped off the elevator bank.

I spent the morning organizing the household inventory in Alessandro’s private study while Mia napped securely in her nursery under the watchful eye of a baby monitor. The digital screen on the mahogany desk flashed with financial updates, Zurich market trends, and email notifications from the Duca Corporation’s board of directors.

At 11:15 AM, the private intercom chimed. Raymond’s voice crackled through the speaker, tight and strained.

“Mr. Duca is currently in a closed-door executive session on the seventeenth floor, Elena. But there’s a gentleman in the lobby insisting on an immediate audience. He claims it concerns the forty-million-dollar Swiss acquisition.”

I frowned, stepping away from the desk. “Who is it, Raymond? Did Mr. Duca schedule an unlisted visitor?”

“No. He says his name is Julian Vance. He’s the senior managing director of Vanguard Capital—the firm backing the Swiss investment.”

My stomach tightened into a hard knot. I knew enough about Alessandro’s corporate empire to know that Julian Vance was his primary rival, a ruthless corporate raider notorious for hostile takeovers and dirty backroom deals. Vance had been trying to sabotage the Swiss deal for weeks.

“Mr. Duca left strict instructions that no one from Vanguard was to be granted access to the residential levels,” I reminded Raymond firmly.

“I told him that, Elena. But he’s not alone. He came with two federal marshals and a court-ordered premises inspection warrant.”

Panic flared hot in my chest. A warrant?

Before I could reply, the private elevator chime echoed through the penthouse foyer. The stainless-steel doors slid open with a soft ping.

Julian Vance stepped out, impeccably tailored in a charcoal Tom Ford suit, flanked not by corporate associates, but by two men in law enforcement windbreakers holding manila folders. Behind them stood someone whose presence made my blood run instantly cold.

Marcus.

He stood grinning smugly, a thick legal binder clutched in his sweaty palms, his cheap jacket replaced by a borrowed tie that made him look like a cheap imitation of a corporate shark.

“Well, well,” Vance purred, his voice dripping with condescending amusement as he strolled across the pristine white marble of the foyer. “Looks like the rumors are true. The untouchable Alessandro Duca isn’t just running a multi-billion-dollar conglomerate from his penthouse—he’s also harboring an undocumented minor and an unverified domestic employee living under fraudulent credentials.”

I stepped out of the study, placing myself defensively between the hallway leading to the nursery and the intruders. My voice shook, but I forced it to remain steady.

“You have no jurisdiction here. This is a private residential floor. Show me the warrant.”

One of the men in law enforcement windbreakers stepped forward, flashing a folded document. “Federal subpoena for inspection of unregistered dependents and labor code violations filed by Mr. Marcus Jennings, acting as legal guardian and next of kin.”

Marcus stepped forward, his eyes gleaming with malicious triumph. “That’s right, El. I told you you couldn't hide from me. Your little boss might be able to throw me against a wall, but he can't buy off a federal magistrate. That kid upstairs is mine, and your little housekeeping scam is over.”
