Chapter 7 - The Warzone In The Penthouse And The Return Of The Tiger*

The air in the penthouse grew thick with impending disaster. Vance smiled like a cat watching a cornered mouse, while Marcus puffed out his chest, basking in the miserable illusion of power.

“You’re making a catastrophic mistake,” I said, my voice ringing clear across the marble foyer as I stood my ground. “That warrant is a civil petition, not an eviction notice, and Marcus has zero legal standing—”

“She doesn't need legal standing, my dear,” Vance interrupted smoothly, checking his gold Rolex. “All we need is enough bad press to tank Duca’s Swiss acquisition this afternoon. A billionaire harboring illegal dependents and undocumented labor makes wonderful front-page fodder for the Wall Street Journal. By tonight, the board will strip him of his CEO title, and Vanguard will pick up his shipping lines for pennies on the dollar.”

So that was it. Marcus wasn’t just acting out of spite; he had been bought and paid for by Julian Vance as a corporate torpedo to sink Alessandro’s empire.

Before Vance could signal his men to push past me toward the nursery, the private elevator chimed again.

This time, the sound was heavy, sharp, and final.

The doors slid open with violent speed.

Alessandro Duca stepped off the elevator. He hadn't just returned from his meeting; he looked like a storm cloud incarnate. His suit jacket was gone, his tie loosened, and his gray eyes burned with a cold, absolute fury that made even the federal marshals instinctively take a half-step back.

He didn't yell. He didn't rush forward. He simply walked slowly across the marble floor until he stood directly between Julian Vance and the hallway leading to Mia’s room.

“Julian,” Alessandro said softly, his voice dropping into a lethal purr. “I see you brought trash into my home again.”

Vance’s smug smile faltered for a fraction of a second, though he quickly recovered, smoothing his lapels. “Save the tough-guy act, Alessandro. We have a federal inspection warrant for unregistered occupants and labor fraud. Your little domestic arrangement is over. Sign away the Swiss shipping rights by 2:00 PM, or this goes public.”

Alessandro didn't even glance at the warrant. He turned his gaze slowly toward Marcus, who shrank back under the terrifying weight of his stare.

“You accepted thirty thousand dollars wired from an offshore account registered to Vanguard Capital yesterday afternoon,” Alessandro stated casually, his voice echoing in the silent foyer.

Marcus’s face drained of all color. “W-What? That’s a lie—”

“I own the bank that processed the wire, you absolute fool,” Alessandro cut in coldly. “Did you really think a corporate raider like Julian Vance would risk his own skin executing a dirty trick without buying a disposable pawn? The moment you signed that affidavit, you committed perjury on a federal document.”

Vance’s face hardened instantly. “You’re bluffing—”

“Am I?” Alessandro snapped his fingers.

From the elevator behind him stepped Arthur Vance—Julian’s own chief compliance officer—accompanied by two corporate attorneys carrying thick black briefcases. Arthur looked terrified, sweating profusely under Alessandro’s suffocating gaze.

“Mr. Vance,” Arthur stammered, looking at Julian. “Mr. Duca’s legal team acquired our internal communication logs forty minutes ago. The board... the board has already voted to emergency-suspend your executive authority for corporate espionage and bribery.”

Julian Vance turned pale as a ghost, his gold Rolex suddenly feeling like a lead weight on his wrist. “That’s impossible—”

“Nothing is impossible when you’re dealing with a man who has nothing left to lose,” Alessandro stepped forward, towering over Vance with terrifying majesty. “You tried to use an innocent child and a terrified mother as leverage in a corporate merger. You violated the sanctity of my home.”

Alessandro turned his gaze to the federal marshals, who were quietly folding their papers and looking remarkably eager to vanish.

“Escort Mr. Vance and his hired parasite off my property before I forget I’m a civilized man,” Alessandro commanded.

Marcus let out a whimper as one of the marshals grabbed his arm, yanking him backward toward the elevator. “El! Help me! El, you can’t let him do this—”

“Get out of my sight, Marcus,” I said coldly, watching him dragged away without an ounce of pity.

As the elevator doors closed on Vance and Marcus, sealing their professional and legal doom, the penthouse fell utterly silent once more.

Alessandro turned slowly, his gaze landing on me. The icy fury in his eyes melted into a profound, exhausted gentleness.

“Are you alright?” he asked, stepping closer.

“I am now,” I breathed, the last eight months of fear finally evaporating into the air.
