Chapter 10 - Epilogue: The Promise Kept and the Horizon Ahead

Ten years later.
The rain tapped softly against the reinforced glass of the Manhattan penthouse, but inside, the apartment was warm, filled with the rich scent of roasting rosemary chicken, bubbling garlic butter, and the lively chatter of teenagers arguing over college applications.
Thomas Hail—now sixteen years old, towering over me by a full two inches, with the same sharp jawline and piercing gray eyes as his uncle—was furiously debating the merits of engineering versus corporate law with Julian at the dining table. Across from them, sixteen-year-old Ivy was rolling her eyes, her sketchpad open as she drew charcoal portraits of Barnaby, who was now a very old, very lazy golden retriever sleeping soundly beside her chair.
I stood at the kitchen island, basting the chicken with a long wooden spoon, just as I had done a decade ago.
A pair of strong, familiar arms wrapped around my waist from behind, and a warm chin rested comfortably on my shoulder.
“You’ve been standing on your feet for three hours, Mrs. Hail,” Julian whispered, pressing a soft kiss against my temple.
I smiled, leaning back into his embrace, letting the wooden spoon rest on the marble counter. After five years of marriage and fifteen years of building a life together from the ruins of old secrets and corporate greed, the title still occasionally gave me a soft thrill.
“Someone has to make sure dinner doesn’t burn, Mr. Hail,” I teased softly, turning my head to kiss his cheek.
Julian chuckled, tightening his arms around me as he looked out across the room at the children—our children—laughing together under the warm glow of the chandelier. The shadows of Saint Anne’s, the dark boardrooms, the midnight trust documents, and the cold loneliness of the past were all long gone, replaced by something infinitely more powerful and enduring.

“Let it burn,” Julian murmured, his voice thick with quiet devotion. “We have all the time in the world.”
Outside the high-rise windows, the city lights of New York twinkled like a million fallen stars, guiding us safely into whatever tomorrow would bring.
