Chapter 5 - The Enemy Within: Corporate Vultures and Midnight Ultimatum

Before Julian could even process the words written on his dead sister’s trust document, the heavy oak front doors downstairs slammed open with a force that rattled the very foundations of Saint Anne’s. Heavy footsteps—too many of them, and too expensive-sounding for a municipal shelter—echoed up the grand staircase.

“Mr. Hail!” Marcus hissed, gripping his phone as his screen lit up with flashing security alerts. “We’ve been compromised. Three black SUVs just pulled up outside. It’s Richard Sterling and members of the Hail Group executive board.”

Julian’s face went from pale to a terrifying, chilling mask of absolute fury. Richard Sterling was the senior executive vice president of Hail Group—a man who had been circling the CEO chair like a vulture for years, waiting for Julian to slip, burn out, or make a fatal error in judgment.

“How did they know we’d be here?” Julian muttered, his voice dangerously low.

“They didn’t track us,” I blurted out, stepping forward from the doorway, my protective maternal instincts overriding my fear of the billionaire. “Mr. Hail, think about it. Who runs the city’s emergency placement committees and municipal funding boards? Sterling has been buying up municipal real estate contracts all over the Lower East Side for months. He didn’t just stumble on this place—he was the one orchestrating Toby’s transfer to the upstate consortium for tomorrow morning!”

Julian looked at me, a flash of sudden, searing realization cutting through his dark eyes. He didn’t question how a housekeeper had pieced it together so fast. He simply nodded once.

A moment later, the hallway outside Room 4B filled with the sound of expensive leather shoes clicking briskly against the linoleum. Richard Sterling appeared in the doorway, flanked by two private corporate security guards in tailored suits and a nervous-looking municipal social services director holding a thick red file folder.

Sterling was a tall, silver-haired man in his late fifties with a permanent, predatory smile that never quite reached his cold blue eyes.

“Well, well, well,” Sterling purred, stepping into the cramped room as if he owned the building. “Late-night charity work, Julian? I must admit, visiting the wards of the Lower East Side doesn’t usually fit your portfolio of high-stakes corporate acquisitions.”

Julian didn’t move an inch. He slowly stepped in front of little Toby’s cot, placing himself directly between the boy and the corporate raiders.

“Get out of my sight, Richard,” Julian said, his voice a lethal whisper.

Sterling chuckled, crossing his arms over his chest. “I wouldn't be so hasty with the hostility, Julian. As senior acting director of the city’s child welfare oversight committee—a position, ironically funded in large part by Hail Group philanthropic grants—I have jurisdiction over every unassigned ward in this facility. And according to the state transfer manifest signed three days ago, minor 884-Delta is scheduled for immediate state custody at dawn.”

Sterling’s gaze shifted past Julian’s shoulder, landing directly on little Toby. A cruel, triumphant grin spread across Sterling’s face.

“Fascinating resemblance, isn't it?” Sterling taunted softly. “The dark hair. The eyes. Rumor has it Clara had a little secret before she took that fatal trip to Paris. A secret that, if revealed to the public and the SEC, would throw the entire company’s succession structure into chaotic litigation. Unless, of course... someone with controlling voting power signs a quiet voluntary relinquishment of the board’s executive veto.”
