Chapter 5 - THE BETRAYAL OF COUSIN DOMINIC

Following the trajectory of Sofia’s outstretched finger, every head in the grand ballroom turned simultaneously toward the far corner of the opulent room where Dominic Bellini stood frozen like a statue.
Dominic’s hand was locked halfway between the table and his mouth, holding a crystal glass of deep red vintage wine that trembled violently as his fingers turned white around the stem.
The silence in the room became so absolute that the distant hum of the estate’s industrial HVAC system sounded like a roaring jet engine echoing through a hollow canyon.
“I saw the exact same miniature camera housing plugged into the wall outlet inside his private guest suite on the second floor yesterday morning while I was dusting the crown moldings,” Sofia revealed calmly.
Dominic didn’t wait to be questioned, interrogated, or formally accused by his powerful cousin; survival instinct overrode every shred of his arrogant pride in a split second.
He dropped his wineglass, shattering the crystal against the marble floor in an explosion of red liquid and broken glass, and turned on his heel to sprint desperately toward the side exit doors.
“Stop him!” Marco roared, his voice shaking the crystal chandeliers overhead.
Three massive syndicate enforcers exploded into motion, charging across the ballroom like freight trains and tackling Dominic hard against a heavy mahogany dining table loaded with hors d’oeuvres.
The table overturned with a deafening crash, sending silver platters, expensive china, and roasted meats flying in all directions as Dominic was pinned face-down to the floor under a pile of muscle.
High-society guests screamed in blind terror, scattering in every direction like startled birds, scrambling away from the violence while Vance and his security team secured all perimeter doors.
Marco never even flinched during the chaotic scuffle; he simply stood in the center of the gallery, holding the tiny pinhole camera between his thumb and forefinger as if it were the most worthless object on earth.
He watched in cold, silent contempt as his traitorous cousin was hauled up from the floor by his expensive silk lapels, his nose bleeding and his designer suit ruined by spilled wine and dust.
Before Vance could drag Dominic away toward the basement interrogation cells for a very long and painful night of reckoning, Sofia stepped forward and spoke one final, chilling sentence.
“There’s one more thing you need to know about this device, Mr. Bellini,” Sofia said quietly, her voice cutting through the groans of the captured traitor and the murmurs of the terrified guests.
Marco lowered his gaze from Dominic and looked down at the young maid, his expression a complex mixture of profound respect, heavy debt, and lingering disbelief.
“What is it?” Marco asked, his tone softening just a fraction toward the woman who had saved his life twice in the span of a single evening.
Sofia glanced sideways toward Vivian, who was now sobbing quietly into her hands as two guards stood on either side of her with impassive, stone-cold expressions.
“The camera wasn’t just recording your bedroom yesterday for offline playback,” Sofia whispered, her dark eyes locking onto Marco’s with unwavering intensity.
“It was livestreaming every second of your private life directly to an encrypted off-site server controlled by Dominic and his foreign backers.”
The final puzzle piece clicked violently into place inside Marco Bellini’s mind, dissolving every lingering doubt, every false sense of security, and every illusion of familial loyalty he had ever held.
He suddenly understood with crystal-clear certainty that his enemies across the criminal underworld hadn’t been waiting passively to see whether he would recover from his near-fatal ambush.
They had been watching his painful, agonizing physical rehabilitation in real-time, laughing behind his back as he struggled to walk, breath, and see in his own home.
And the woman he had trusted with his heart, his name, and his future had been the chief architect of his humiliation, trading his life for a seat at a table built on treachery.
Marco closed his fist tightly around the tiny brass camera, crushing the delicate micro-circuits inside his calloused palm until the metal casing bit sharply into his skin.
“Take them both down to the lower vault,” Marco commanded, his voice devoid of any human warmth as he turned his back on his former fiancée and his traitorous cousin.
Vance nodded sharply, signaling his men to drag the kicking, screaming conspirators out of the grand ballroom through the service elevator doors, erasing them from the estate forever.
As the heavy steel doors slid shut with a definitive, metallic clang, the remaining guests stood in terrified awe, realizing that the Bellini syndicate was not broken, weak, or defeated.
Instead, through an unexpected twist of fate and the sharp eyes of a twenty-six-year-old maid, the blind king of Long Island had just purged his court of poison, emerging more dangerous than ever before.
Marco turned slowly toward Sofia, who was quietly picking up her dropped serving tray from the floor, preparing to return to the shadows from whence she had come.
“What is your name, child?” Marco asked, his voice carrying a newfound weight of respect and authority that commanded the entire room’s attention.
Sofia stood up straight, holding the silver tray against her apron with both hands, and looked the most feared man in New York directly in the eye without a trace of fear.
“Sofia Ramirez, Mr. Bellini,” she replied clearly, her voice echoing softly across the silent, sprawling ballroom.
“Sofia,” Marco repeated thoughtfully, tasting the name as if it were a rare, expensive vintage wine that had finally cleared his palate of bitter poison. “Pack your things from the staff quarters tonight.”
Vivian’s discarded allies gasped audibly, assuming the maid was about to be fired or banished for her insubordination, but Marco’s next words completely stunned everyone in the room.

“You are no longer working upstairs housekeeping, Sofia,” Marco declared, a subtle, grim smile finally touching the corner of his lips. “Starting tomorrow morning, you are my new executive confidential secretary and head of internal estate security.”
Sofia’s eyes widened slightly in genuine surprise, but she quickly masked her shock, offering a respectful nod of acceptance to the man who had just rewritten her entire destiny.
