Chapter 4 - The Arrest Of Richard And Diane, And The Seizure Of The Mercer Estate

With Evan safely locked away in a federal holding cell awaiting arraignment, the second phase of the Mercer contingency plan moved with the unstoppable, crushing momentum of an avalanche.
Forty-eight hours after the hospital raid, James Sterling’s legal team, backed by a convoy of federal marshals and local police units, executed simultaneous search and seizure warrants across the greater Seattle area.
Their primary target: the sprawling, gated Mercer family estate in the exclusive Medina neighborhood—a sprawling twenty-room mansion purchased entirely with the funds Richard had siphoned from Mercer Logistics.
From the comfort of my private hospital suite—now guarded by two discreet private security operatives hired by James to ensure my complete physical safety—I monitored the live police scanner feed and high-definition aerial news broadcasts streaming on my laptop.
Live helicopter footage showed local news vans crowding the private circular driveway of the Medina estate.
Uniformed officers were carrying out armloads of designer luggage, luxury art pieces, gold bullion bars, and filing cabinets marked with Richard’s private offshore account numbers.
Outside the front portico, Richard Mercer stood in his bespoke cashmere sweater, his face purple with incandescent rage as he shook his fists at the cameras and screamed obscenities at the federal agents slapping handcuffs onto his wrists.
Beside him, Diane was being escorted down the stone steps by a female officer, her face buried in her designer silk scarf as she wept hysterically, realizing that her lifetime of country-club status, social supremacy, and stolen wealth had just vanished into thin air.
My phone—a brand-new secure smartphone provided by James—buzzed softly on the nightstand.
I swiped the screen and answered.
“Claire, are you watching the broadcast?” James’s voice came through crisp and triumphant.
“Richard tried to claim executive immunity under a forged family trust clause, but Judge Lin threw his motion out of court before he even finished his sentence. Both parents are currently in custody at the King County detention center, and all domestic accounts have been frozen.”
“And the assets?” I asked, watching the live helicopter footage capture Richard being shoved into the back of a black and white cruiser.
“Every single property, vehicle, investment portfolio, and offshore bank account linked to Richard, Diane, and Evan has been legally attached to Mercer Logistics under emergency corporate restitution orders,” James reported.
“By tomorrow morning, you will be the sole, undisputed controlling shareholder and Chief Executive Officer of the entire enterprise.”
A deep, profound sense of physical and mental relief washed over my soul.
The nightmare in the marble foyer—the sound of the cane, the blinding pain in my tibia, the cruel smiles of the people I had trusted—was finally being buried under the unyielding weight of federal law.
“Thank you, James,” I whispered, my voice thick with emotion.
“You didn't just save my company; you gave me my life back.”

“My job is just beginning, Claire,” James replied warmly.
“Rest up, heal that leg, and prepare yourself. Because tomorrow, you walk back into your company as the undisputed queen.”
