Chapter 5 - The Triumphant Return To Mercer Logistics And The Final Reckoning

Ten days after my discharge from the hospital, walking slowly with the aid of a sleek carbon-fiber cane, I stepped out of a black sedan and stood before the towering glass-and-steel monolith of Mercer Logistics headquarters in downtown Seattle.

The morning sun reflected brilliantly off the corporate logo emblazoned across the glass facade: Mercer Logistics.

As I walked through the revolving front doors, the lobby security guards—who had previously been hand-picked by Richard to monitor my movements and report back to Evan—immediately stood at attention, their eyes widening in shock and absolute terror as they recognized me.

“Good morning, Mrs. Mercer,” the lead security guard stammered, frantically pressing the elevator override button for the executive penthouse suite.

“Welcome... welcome back to headquarters.”

I didn't smile, nor did I offer a polite acknowledgment.

I simply stepped into the private executive elevator, inserted the newly encoded master security keycard James had provided, and rode up to the top floor in absolute silence.

When the elevator doors slid open, revealing the sprawling, sunlit executive boardroom overlooking Elliott Bay, the entire corporate executive suite froze.

Seated around the mahogany conference table were the remaining senior vice presidents, regional directors, and financial controllers who had spent years kissing up to Evan while quietly ignoring the systematic embezzlement happening right under their noses.

As I stepped into the room, leaning slightly on my carbon-fiber cane, the heavy click of my footsteps against the polished hardwood floor echoed through the vast space.

Every single person at the table turned their head.

Silence descended so deeply you could hear the distant cry of seagulls outside the glass windows.

At the head of the table sat Arthur Pendelton, the corporate general counsel who had spent a decade drafting the fraudulent shell corporation paperwork for Richard and Evan.

Arthur stood up so fast his leather chair crashed backward onto the carpet, his face turning the color of curdled milk.

“C-Claire...?” Arthur stammered, pointing a trembling finger at me.

“What are you doing here? You’re supposed to be recovering at home! Evan said you had a severe domestic accident—!”

“Evan is currently residing in a federal detention cell awaiting trial for wire fraud, embezzlement, and felonious assault,” I cut him off, my voice ringing clear, cold, and commanding across the boardroom.

I walked slowly to the head of the table, placing my hands on the back of the primary executive leather chair where Richard Mercer used to sit.

Arthur Pendelton swallowed hard, his hands shaking as he gripped the edge of the table.

“That’s... that’s absurd!” Arthur blustered, trying to summon a shred of his professional arrogance.

“You have no legal standing to walk in here and commandeer a board meeting! The corporate charter states—!”

I reached into my briefcase, pulled out a certified, judge-signed federal receivership order and a 100-percent equity transfer certificate, and dropped them squarely onto the polished mahogany surface.

“The corporate charter has been amended, Arthur,” I stated coldly, looking around the room at the pale, terrified faces of the executives.

“Effective immediately, every single officer, director, and legal counsel appointed by the Mercer family is hereby terminated for cause, incompetence, and complicity in systemic corporate fraud.”

Arthur’s jaw dropped.

“You can't fire us! We control the operational contracts!”

“You control nothing,” I said, my eyes locking onto his with absolute, terrifying power.

“Mercer Logistics is now 100 percent owned and operated by Claire Mercer. And the first order of business under my new administration is conducting a forensic audit of every single contract, kickback, and illicit payment this executive team has processed over the last seven years.”

I pressed the intercom button on the wall console.

“James? You can send the federal auditors and campus security up to the penthouse now.”

Within seconds, the heavy double doors of the boardroom swung open, and a team of federal agents, forensic accountants, and private security guards marched into the room, fanning out across the table.

Arthur Pendelton slumped back into his chair, his head dropping into his hands as the reality of his utter destruction washed over him.

I turned away from the table, walking slowly over to the floor-to-ceiling windows to look out over the sprawling shipping ports and distribution hubs that I had built from the ground up with my own inheritance and my own vision.
