Chapter 2 - The Ghost in the Ledger

The study remained silent long after the grandfather clock in the hallway struck nine. Damian stood by the floor-to-ceiling mahogany bookshelves, his eyes fixed on the heavy oak door. He did not call security. He did not sound the alarm. Instead, his mind worked with cold, calculated precision, stripping away the layers of coincidence until only raw reality remained. Elena Cruz had not stumbled into his household by chance. Someone had engineered her placement. Someone who knew his daily habits, his security protocols, and the exact layout of the top floor of the Reyes estate.
He walked over to his desk. The leather-bound ledger containing the private acquisitions of Reyes Logistics rested in its usual position. Or rather, it appeared to be in its usual position. Damian’s hand hovered over the spine. He did not open it immediately. He checked the tiny, almost invisible lead seal he always placed beneath the front cover before leaving the room.
The lead was crushed.
Someone had opened it. Someone had photographed or removed the sensitive documents detailing the financial dealings between Reyes Logistics and the city municipal council—dealings that involved millions of dollars in real estate contracts across downtown Chicago.
Downstairs, the faint sound of a vacuum cleaner hummed against the hardwood floors. Elena was working. Trying to act normal. Trying to protect herself from a monster who used her like a key to pick a lock.
Damian pressed the intercom button on his desk.
“Rosalind.”
A pause, then the speaker clicked. “Yes, Damian?”
“Send Victor up to my office. Immediately.”
“Are you sure about that? Victor can be heavy-handed, and Elena is already terrified—”
“Victor knows how to move without scaring the staff,” Damian interrupted, his voice dropping an octave. “Just send him up.”
Five minutes later, Victor Vance stepped into the study. At six-foot-four with shoulders built like an iron beam, Victor had managed Damian’s private security for over a decade. He possessed the rare quality of absolute discretion combined with lethal efficiency.
“Boss,” Victor said, closing the door softly behind him.
Damian turned around, handing Victor the phone displaying the text messages from Marcus.
Victor read them once. His expression did not change, but his eyes narrowed into cold slits. “Planted.”
“Planted,” Damian agreed. “She was sent here to steal the municipal acquisition file. She didn’t want to do it. Whoever is holding the leash is using violence to force her hand.”
“Do you want me to pick her up? Interrogate her?”
“No,” Damian said sharply. “If we break her now, whoever is pulling the strings vanishes into the wind. I want to know who Marcus is. I want his full name, his address, his associates, and every financial transaction connected to him within the last forty-eight hours.”
“It’s risky keeping her here knowing she’s a conduit for industrial espionage,” Victor pointed out, adjusting his cuffs.
“It’s riskier letting her walk out into a city where someone is waiting to finish breaking her bones,” Damian replied coldly. “Find out where she was before she came to Rosalind. Dig into her background. Every official record, every apartment lease, every medical clinic visit. Someone created a ghost, Victor. Find the flesh and blood underneath.”
As Victor slipped out through a private service exit, Damian walked over to the window. Down below, on the manicured lawn near the private driveway, he spotted Elena. She was emptying a trash receptacle into a larger bin, her movements robotic, her head constantly turning as if expecting someone to step out from behind the ancient oak trees.
Damian watched her pull her left sleeve down over her knuckles again. The gesture triggered something deep inside him—a long-buried memory of helplessness that he had spent two decades turning into absolute power.

Marcus thought he was clever. He thought he could use a terrified girl to dismantle the Reyes empire from the inside. But Marcus had made one fatal mistake.
He had brought his war inside Damian’s house.
