Chapter 9 - Healing Scars

Three days later, the rain had cleared, leaving behind a crisp, brilliant autumn afternoon across Chicago. The leaves in the courtyard of the Reyes estate had turned a vibrant copper and gold, rustling softly in the cool afternoon breeze.

Inside the spacious ground-floor kitchen, the air smelled of freshly baked cinnamon rolls and roasted coffee beans.

Elena stood by the marble island, wearing her usual black uniform, though her posture was noticeably different. The nervous tension that had once defined her every movement was gone. Her shoulders were relaxed, her head held high, and when she moved, her sleeves stayed comfortably pinned at her wrists—revealing faint, fading bruises that were slowly healing under the care of proper medicine and absolute safety.

Rosalind stood beside her, laughing as Elena expertly rolled out a batch of pastry dough.

“You know,” Rosalind said, dusting flour off her apron, “Damian hasn't complained about his coffee once this week. Either the blend has magically improved, or someone is finally learning how to smile while pouring it.”

Elena blushed slightly, looking down at the rolling pin. “He’s been very kind, Ms. Marsh. Leo is recovering well in the guest wing, and the doctors said his arm will heal completely within two months.”

“Damian isn’t kind to people just to be nice,” Rosalind noted gently, leaning against the counter. “He’s protective. There’s a big difference. And in all the years I’ve worked in this house, I’ve never seen him tear down a threat the way he did this week.”

Before Elena could answer, the kitchen door swung open, and Damian walked in.

He had removed his suit jacket, his white dress shirt slightly unbuttoned at the collar, sleeves rolled up to his forearms. Both women stopped what they were doing and looked toward him.

“Mr. Reyes,” Elena said, dipping her head respectfully.

“Elena,” Damian replied, his dark eyes softening just a fraction as he looked at her. He then shifted his gaze toward Rosalind. “Is Leo eating?”

“Like a teenage boy who hasn't seen food in a month,” Rosalind smiled. “The doctor checked him out an hour ago. He’s going to be just fine.”

Damian nodded in satisfaction. He walked over toward the counter, picking up a fresh cup of coffee that Elena had just poured. He took a sip, letting the warmth settle before looking directly at Elena.

“The municipal zoning vote cleared the committee unanimously this morning,” Damian said quietly. “Arthur Vance submitted his resignation an hour ago.”

Elena let out a long, shuddering breath, feeling the last remaining knot of fear in her chest finally dissolve completely. “It’s really over?”

“It’s over,” Damian confirmed. “No one will ever threaten you or your brother again. You have my word.”

Elena looked up, meeting his steady, intense gaze. For the first time in months, she didn't look away. Instead, she offered a genuine, radiant smile—one that reached all the way to her eyes.

“Thank you, Mr. Reyes,” she whispered.

Damian returned a subtle, rare smile of his own. “Call me Damian, Elena. You earned that right three days ago.”
