Chapter 4 - Into the Lion’s Den: The Willow Creek Trap

By late afternoon, Ryan found himself standing outside the iron security gates of Willow Creek Sanitarium—a sprawling, gothic-style private psychiatric facility nestled deep in the dense pine forests outside the city limits. The institution was heavily funded by the Whitmore Foundation, meaning every doctor, orderly, and administrator on the payroll ultimately answered to Evelyn.

Ryan flashed his visitor pass at the reinforced security checkpoint. The heavy steel doors hissed open, admitting him into a sterile, white-walled corridor that smelled faintly of industrial bleach and chemical sedatives.

He was escorted to Room 404, a secure observation suite at the end of the hall. Through the reinforced wire-glass window, Ryan saw Maya. She was sitting on the edge of a bolted-down metal cot, wearing a standard-issue gray institutional jumpsuit. Her face was pale, devoid of makeup, and dark purple bruise marks bloomed across her cheek and nose from Evelyn’s assault. She looked like a ghost of the vibrant woman he had fallen in love with.

The heavy steel door clicked open, and Ryan stepped inside. The door locked behind him with an ominous, final thud.

“Maya,” Ryan whispered, rushing forward and dropping to his knees beside the cot. He grabbed her trembling hands, which were ice cold.

Maya flinched, her eyes darting frantically toward the corner of the room where a dome-shaped security camera blinked with a steady red light. “Ryan, you shouldn’t have come here,” she choked out, her voice barely a whisper. “They’re watching every second. They’re listening. They told me if I keep claiming Evelyn attacked me, they’re going to transfer me to the maximum-security ward and cut off my visitation rights with Oliver permanently.”

“Listen to me, Maya, and listen to me very carefully,” Ryan said, leaning in close so his lips brushed her ear, shielding his words from the ceiling microphone with his shoulder. “I know the truth. I have it all on backup. I pulled the hidden camera footage from the nursery clock.”

Maya’s breath hitched. Tears welled up in her eyes, spilling over her lashes in a rush of overwhelming relief. “You... you saw it? You believe me?”

“I saw the whole thing, Maya. My mother framed you. She took the inhaler, she staged the fight, she hurt you,” Ryan said, his voice thick with controlled rage. “She’s trying to isolate all of us. But we can’t fight her inside her own system. The director of this facility is on her payroll. If we stay here, she’ll destroy us legally and medically.”

Before Maya could reply, the room’s overhead intercom crackled to life with a burst of static, followed by Evelyn’s smooth, terrifyingly calm voice echoing through the speaker.

“Visiting hours are officially concluded, Mr. Whitmore. Step away from the patient immediately, or security will be forced to escort you off the premises and revoke your visiting privileges indefinitely.”

Ryan looked up at the camera lens, his jaw tightening into a hard line of defiance. He didn't say a word to the speaker. Instead, he squeezed Maya’s hands tightly, pressing a small, unmarked USB thumb drive into her palm beneath the edge of her blanket.

“Hide this in the hem of your mattress,” Ryan whispered fiercely. “I’m putting our contingency plan into motion tonight. Be packed, be ready, and don't trust a single person in this building.”

Before the orderlies could burst through the door, Ryan stood up, turned around, and marched out of the room, leaving the surveillance camera staring blindly at an empty hallway.
