Chapter 5 - The Midnight Heist and the Digital Strike

Midnight arrived with a furious renewal of the storm. Sheets of rain battered the slate roof of the Willow Creek facility as a sleek, black unmarked van slipped past the security perimeter without turning on its headlights.
Inside the van sat Marcus Vance—Ryan’s former college roommate who had spent ten years working as a senior cyber-security consultant and private investigator specializing in corporate corruption.
“You’re playing with nuclear fire, Ryan,” Marcus said, his fingers flying across a ruggedized military laptop screen as he monitored the facility’s internal digital floor plan. “If Evelyn’s legal team catches wind of this tonight, she’ll freeze all your bank accounts, slap an emergency restraining order on you, and have you locked in the next cell over.”
“Let her try,” Ryan muttered, adjusting his black tactical raincoat. He stared through the windshield at the monolithic silhouette of the sanitarium against the stormy sky. “She thinks she owns this city because she bought the politicians. She forgot that code doesn’t care about last names.”
Marcus hit enter on his keyboard, executing a customized script that targeted Willow Creek’s main digital infrastructure. Within seconds, a localized power surge traveled through the building’s grid, plunging the east wing into total darkness. The emergency backup generators kicked in after a thirty-second delay—a crucial window of blind spots.
“System’s offline, doors are unlatched on the third and fourth floors, and the security logs are currently looping a pre-recorded loop from three days ago,” Marcus announced, pulling a pair of night-vision goggles over his forehead. “You’ve got exactly twelve minutes before the automated diagnostics flag the manual override, Ryan. Move.”
Ryan didn't hesitate. He grabbed a crowbar and a heavy-duty master keycard cloned from an administrator’s tablet, opened the van door, and plunged into the torrential downpour. He scaled the rear fire escape stairs, slipping through an unlatched service window on the fourth floor.
The interior hallways of the sanitarium were pitch black, illuminated only by the faint, eerie green glow of emergency exit signs cutting through thick clouds of artificial mist. Ryan moved with the silent, practiced precision of a shadow, dodging the automated hallway patrols whose flashlights swept blindly past cross-corridors.
He reached Room 404. The electronic lock blinked a dead amber light. He slid his cloned master card into the slot, and with a soft, pneumatic click, the heavy steel door swung open.
Maya was standing by the window, already dressed in civilian clothes she had managed to stash away, her face resolute. Behind her, holding Oliver—who had been quietly smuggled out of the nursery ward by a bribed sympathetic nurse—was a trusted family friend who had joined the underground rescue op.
“You came,” Maya breathed, rushing into Ryan’s arms. He pulled her against his chest, kissing the top of her head before grabbing Oliver into his free arm.
“I told you I would,” Ryan said, his voice steady. “We’re leaving. And this time, we aren't running away. We’re taking everything back.”
As the three of them hurried back down the service stairwell toward the extraction point, the sanitarium’s alarm systems suddenly wailed to life, flashing blinding red strobe lights down the corridor. The manual override had been detected.
“They know!” Marcus’s voice crackled frantically through Ryan’s tactical earpiece. “Get to the loading dock now! Security guards are swarming the main lobby!”

Ryan shielded Oliver with his body, kicking open the heavy steel exit door at the bottom of the stairs just as a pair of security guards rounded the corner shouting orders. With a swift sweep of his leg, Ryan brought down the lead guard, vaulted over his tumbling body, and hauled Maya into the back of the waiting van.
Marcus slammed the van into reverse, spinning the tires against the slick pavement as security flashlights illuminated the rain-slicked courtyard. With a roar of its modified engine, the van smashed through the facility’s secondary security gate, vanishing into the stormy night before the local police could even be dispatched.
