Chapter 13 - The Birth Under Police Guard and the Cry That Broke the Silence of the Night

Inside the sterile, brightly lit delivery room of Putnam County Memorial Hospital, the monitors beeped with a steady, rhythmic urgency.

Harper gripped the side of the hospital bed, her knuckles white, her dark hair plastered to her sweaty forehead as an obstetrician and two nurses hovered over her with focused intensity.

"One more big push, Harper," the doctor urged gently, her gloved hands guiding the final stages of labor. "He’s almost here. You’re doing amazing."

Harper let out a long, ragged scream, putting every ounce of her remaining strength, her rage, her exhaustion, and her survival into one final, violent effort.

The sharp, burning pain peaked—and then, suddenly, vanished.

Replaced by something else.

A sharp, piercing wail that echoed off the white tile walls of the delivery room.

The sound of life.

The nurse scooped up the tiny, squirming bundle, wrapped him swiftly in a warm flannel blanket, and gently laid him across Harper’s chest.

"It’s a boy, Harper," the nurse smiled, brushing a damp strand of hair from Harper’s face. "He’s strong, he’s healthy, and he’s breathing on his own."

Harper looked down at the tiny, wrinkled face pressed against her collarbone.

He had dark tufts of hair, tiny fingers curled into tight fists, and a fierce, stubborn little cry that sounded remarkably like his mother.

"Hi," she whispered, tears finally breaking free and spilling down her cheeks, washing away the salt and sweat of the night. "Hi, little man. You’re safe now. I promise you, you are so safe."

Outside the closed door of the delivery room, stationed quietly in the corridor, two armed state troopers stood guard, ensuring that no one—not corporate lawyers, not private security goons, and certainly not Damian Vale—could ever touch them again.
