Chapter 7 - Damian’s War Room and the Discovery of the Digital Backdoors Harper Left Behind

Back at the Vale estate, the grand master suite was no longer a bedroom—it was a command center of pure, unadulterated panic.
Damian Vale stood in the center of the room, his cashmere sweater torn at the shoulder where Brooke had clawed at him, his dark hair disheveled, his eyes wild and bloodshot.
He wasn't calm anymore.
The veneer of untouchable corporate aristocracy had cracked wide open, revealing the desperate, cornered predator underneath.
"Find her," Damian barked into his encrypted satellite phone, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings. "I don't care if you have to tear up every square inch of Westchester County. Sweep the train stations, check the bus depots, pull the traffic cams on Route 9. If she crosses the county line with that ledger, we are finished. Do you understand me? Finished!"
On the other end of the line, Marcus Vance—head of Vale Enterprises’ private security division and cousin to the disgraced former mayor—spoke in a low, steady tone.
"Mr. Vale, calm down. The local patrols are already blanketing the main arteries. She’s on foot, barefoot, and heavily pregnant. She couldn't have made it more than a mile into this storm without freezing to death or flagging down a civilian."
"She didn't flag down a civilian," Damian snarled, pacing across the room like a caged animal. "She had help."
"Help? Who?"
"Brooke," Damian spat the name like a curse word. "My lovely, traitorous sister-in-law. She helped her get to the eastern service gate."
"Where is Miss Miller now?"
"Locked in the guest suite with the deadbolt thrown from the outside," Damian said coldly. "She can think about her mistakes while I clean up this mess."
He walked over to his mahogany desk, where his primary laptop sat plugged into the secure terminal.
He needed to verify something.
A nagging, cold dread had been clawing at the back of his mind ever since he discovered the safe was empty.
Harper wasn't a corporate mastermind. She was a baker. She spent ten years mixing flour, boiling sugar, and chatting with suburban housewives about sourdough starters. She didn't know the first thing about offshore tax havens, shell corporation layering, or international wire routing.
Or did she?
Damian sat down, his fingers flying across the mechanical keyboard, entering his master administrator password to access the encrypted server where all of Vale Enterprises’ secondary ledgers were backed up.
The screen flashed red.
Access Denied. Credentials Revoked.
Damian froze. He blinked once, twice, staring at the glowing red text as if he couldn't comprehend the syntax.
He typed his backup root key—the override code known only to him and his lead systems architect.
Access Denied. Root Authority Transferred.
"What?" he whispered, his breath catching in his throat.
He clicked on the activity log, scrolling frantically through the system history timestamps.
At 11:45 PM—just fifteen minutes before Harper caught him kissing Brooke in the library—someone had logged into the primary server from the tablet living on the kitchen island downstairs.
Not just logged in.
Executed a complete system purge.
Every digital record of the Morning Bell shell company transactions, every scanned document of the municipal bribes, every email chain linking Vale Enterprises to the municipal bond scandal had been exported to an encrypted, offline external drive, and then wiped clean from the cloud.
And the administrator account used to execute the transfer?
H_Vale_Personal.
Her account.
She hadn't just stumbled upon the physical safe by accident six days ago.
She had been watching him for months.
She had quietly mapped out his digital footprint while he was downstairs entertaining investors, copied every incriminating file onto a thumb drive disguised as a recipe database, and left the physical ledger in the safe just as a decoy to see if he even noticed what was missing.
"She set me up," Damian murmured, the blood draining completely from his face until he looked like a corpse sitting in the dim light of the monitor. "From the very beginning... she knew."
The realization hit him with the force of a physical blow.
She hadn't been a helpless bird in a gilded cage.
She had been an architect of a trap, waiting patiently for him to slip up, waiting for the exact moment when his arrogance blinded him to her true capability.
And the kiss with Brooke?
It wasn't just a betrayal—it was the trigger.
She hadn't run away because she was heartbroken. She had run away because she finally had everything she needed to destroy him, and she didn't want to waste another second in the same house as a man she despised.
"Marcus," Damian said into the phone, his voice dropping to a dead, flat whisper.
"Yes, Mr. Vale?"
"Forget the search parties on the road."
May you like
"Sir?"
"She’s not running away," Damian said, standing up so fast his chair crashed backward onto the hardwood floor. "She’s going straight to the United States Attorney’s office in Manhattan."
