Chapter 15 - The Dawn Of The True Heirs

Before Julian could pull the trigger, the heavy pantry door behind Ryan swung open with a violent kick.

It wasn't Ryan who moved.

It was Emily.

She held a high-powered flare gun—an emergency marine signal launcher that Marcus kept mounted on the wall inside the utility closet.

Without speaking a single word, Emily raised the launcher with both hands and pulled the trigger.

A blinding, magnesium-white flare ignited from the barrel with a deafening roar.

The burning chemical projectile, burning at over two thousand degrees, streaked across the short hallway and struck the fourth armed man square in the center of his chest rig.

The flare detonated into a storm of white-hot sparks and blinding smoke.

The guard shrieked, dropping his carbine as the burning chemicals melted into his nylon vest, sending him thrashing backward out onto the patio deck.

Julian flinched, blinded by the sudden wall of light.

In that split second of distraction, Ryan closed the distance.

He tackled Julian to the floor, driving the old doctor down into the shattered remnants of the glass coffee table.

The silver revolver spun across the hardwood, disappearing beneath a sofa.

Julian struggled, clawing at Ryan’s face with manicured hands, but the strength of an old man was nothing against the raw, protective fury of a father.

Ryan pinned Julian’s shoulders to the floor, his forearm pressed hard against his uncle's windpipe.

"It's over, Julian," Ryan growled, his breathing heavy and ragged.

"Look at me."

"It's over."

Outside, the night sky was suddenly split by the deep, rhythmic thrum of helicopter blades.

Twin twin-engine Sikorsky tactical helicopters bearing the yellow and blue markings of the New York State Police dropped over the pine trees, their downwash flattening the grass and sending waves across the lake.

Dual fifty-million-candlepower searchlights slammed down through the shattered roof skylights, bathing the living room in daylight brilliance.

Tactical sirens wailed in the distance as an entire convoy of state police cruisers surged down the gravel lane, their tires tearing up the turf.

Marcus stood up from behind the kitchen island, his weapon lowered, wiping sweat from his eyes.

"Special Assistant Attorney General Lin tracked Julian's satellite phone thirty minutes ago," Marcus said, breathing heavily.

"I gave them our secondary coordinates the moment the perimeter sensor tripped."

Within sixty seconds, tactical officers in full riot gear flooded the house through the front entrance and the broken patio doors.

Julian Sterling was dragged to his feet, cuffed with heavy zip-ties, and pushed down onto the shattered sofa.

His face was bruised, his coat torn, his gold-rimmed glasses hanging crookedly from one ear.

He looked up at Ryan with naked hatred.

"You think this is victory, Ryan?" Julian spat, blood on his lips.

"You will spend the rest of your life answering questions from regulators, courts, and the press."

"You will never have a normal life."

"Mia will never have a normal life."

"She has a life," Ryan answered, standing tall beside Emily.

"That is something you tried to steal from her before she was even born."

Sarah Lin walked into the room, flanked by two federal marshals.

She held up a signed federal warrant.

"Julian Sterling, you are charged with attempted murder, aggravated assault, conspiracy to commit kidnapping, and federal wire fraud."

"The Swiss tribunal petition filed by Michael’s attorneys was dismissed forty minutes ago by the Second Circuit Court of Appeals."

"The court ruled that the trust was formed under Delaware jurisdiction and that Mia Sterling’s legal recognition is final and irrevocable."

Sarah Lin looked at Ryan and nodded with deep respect.

"Michael has already been transferred to federal custody without bail."

"The five-year freeze has officially expired."

"Ryan Sterling is recognized as the sole majority executor of the Sterling Global Trust."

Two troopers hauled Julian out of the house into the flashing red and blue lights.

The remaining mercenaries were secured and led away in chains.

The sound of the helicopters began to recede into the morning sky as the first pale light of dawn broke over the horizon.

Ryan turned toward the hallway.

Mia and Lucas were standing at the edge of the pantry, holding hands.

Mia was still clutching her worn stuffed rabbit.

She looked at the shattered glass, the broken furniture, and then at her father.

Ryan knelt down and opened his arms.

Mia let go of Lucas’s hand and ran as fast as her small legs could carry her, burying herself into Ryan’s chest.

Ryan lifted her into the air, holding her so tight that he could feel every beat of her tiny heart.

Lucas walked over, wrapping his arms around Ryan’s waist.

Emily stepped forward, her eyes filled with tears, standing beside her children.

They walked out through the broken patio doors onto the wooden deck.

The morning sun was rising over the lake, painting the autumn trees in shades of brilliant gold, crimson, and amber.

The air was cold, crisp, and fresh.

Mia looked out across the vast expanse of water and the endless blue sky reaching past the mountains.

"Daddy?" she asked softly, pointing her tiny finger toward the horizon.

"Is this the real garden?"

Ryan kissed her forehead, tears finally slipping past his defenses, falling onto her dark hair.

"Yes, Mia," Ryan said, holding his family as the sunlight washed over them.

"This is the real garden."

"And it belongs to you."
