Chapter 9 - The Aqueduct Extraction

Branches whipped against Ryan’s face as he plunged into the dense hardwood forest separating his property from the old Croton Aqueduct trail.

The thorns tore at his cashmere sweater and slashed his hands, but he kept his body hunched over Mia, acting as a human shield against the underbrush.

Behind him, the roar of an all-terrain vehicle’s engine ripped through the woods.

Twin halogen beams cut through the skeletal oak trees, casting erratic shadows across the wet leaf litter.

Viktor had recovered.

The ATV was closing the gap fast, chewing through the muddy incline with four-wheel-drive tires.

"Stop the vehicle, Mr. Sterling!" Viktor’s voice crackled through a handheld bullhorn.

"You're endangering the child!"

Ryan ignored the roar behind him.

He reached the stone boundary wall that marked the edge of the Sterling estate.

The colonial dry-stone wall stood four feet high, slick with moss and cold rain.

Ryan hoisted Mia over first, setting her gently into a deep pile of fallen leaves on the opposite side.

"Stay down, Mia," he breathed, his lungs searing.

"Don't stand up until I'm over."

Ryan grabbed the top stones and pulled his weight upward.

Just as his boots cleared the stone cap, a spotlight hit him with blinding intensity.

A loud crack echoed through the trees.

A beanbag compression round fired from a riot-control shotgun slammed into Ryan’s right shoulder blade.

The force of the kinetic strike knocked the wind clean out of him.

Ryan crashed down onto the wet leaves beside Mia, gasping for air as sharp, white-hot agony radiated across his upper back.

"Daddy!" Mia cried, crawling toward him through the mud.

"I'm okay... I'm okay, baby," Ryan wheezed, forcing his bruised ribs to expand.

"Keep moving."

He dragged himself to his feet, grabbing Mia’s hand.

The ATV slammed to a halt against the stone wall on the other side.

Viktor leaped down, brandishing the tactical launcher, his face covered in dried blood from the lamp blow.

Two more security guards scrambled over the rocks behind him.

"Cornered, Ryan," Viktor said, stepping onto the top of the wall.

"Give her to me."

Before Viktor could drop down into the aqueduct ditch, the night exploded with sound.

A deafening siren wail split the storm.

High-intensity red and blue strobe lights erupted from the tree line fifty yards ahead on the old access road.

Three unmarked black Chevy Suburbans and four marked New York State Police cruisers smashed through the rusty access gates, their tires spinning gravel.

Spotlights instantly illuminated the stone wall, washing Viktor and his men in harsh white glare.

"STATE POLICE! DROP YOUR WEAPONS! STEP AWAY FROM THE WALL!"

A commanding voice roared over a military-grade PA system.

Tactical troopers in black body armor and Kevlar helmets poured out of the vehicles, raising assault rifles.

Behind them, Marcus Vance stepped out of the lead Suburban, accompanied by a woman in a dark trench coat carrying a federal legal portfolio.

Viktor froze on top of the wall, his hands slowly rising away from the tactical launcher.

The two guards behind him immediately dropped to their knees, raising their empty hands into the rain.

"Down! On the ground! Both of you!" the state troopers shouted, swarming the wall.

Ryan collapsed against the embankment, pulling Mia into his lap.

Marcus jogged down the muddy slope, sliding onto his knees beside Ryan.

"You made it," Marcus said, breathing heavily, pulling off his own wool overcoat and draping it around Mia.

"Is she alright?"

"She's fine," Ryan choked out, tears finally mixing with the rain streaming down his face.

"She's safe."

The woman in the trench coat knelt beside them, flashing a gold badge bearing the seal of the New York State Attorney General's Office.

"I'm Special Assistant Attorney General Sarah Lin," she said calmly, looking at Mia and then at Ryan.

"Mr. Sterling, your attorney filed emergency documentation three hours ago alleging unlawful imprisonment, child concealment, and corporate securities fraud."

"We have a temporary protective custody order issued by the State Supreme Court."

"Mia is legally secured."

Ryan looked back toward the woods.

Through the trees, the lights of his estate were visible on the hilltop.

"Michael is still in the house," Ryan said, his voice hardening into iron.

"Julian is there too."

"They have destruction orders for the medical files and the construction logs."

Sarah Lin stood up and pulled a two-way radio from her belt.

"All units, initiate Sector Alpha warrant service on the main estate," she ordered into the microphone.
