Chapter 13 - The Steel Door Gives Way

A deafening, metal-screeching shriek echoed through the subterranean chamber as the heavy steel locking bolts of the storm shelter door finally sheared under the immense hydraulic pressure of Harrison Vance's improvised breaching tool. Maya stumbled backward, her grip tightening painfully on the iron crowbar as the heavy portal groaned, shifted outward, and swung wide open with a violent crash against the concrete wall. A plume of white dust and acrid smoke billowed into the dark shelter, and standing framed in the bright aperture of the kitchen light was Dr. Harrison Vance, his trench coat stained with soot, a cruel, triumphant smirk plastered across his blood-streaked face. Well, well, look at the brave little babysitter trying to play protector to someone else's dirty secrets, Harrison mocked smoothly, stepping over the threshold into the bunker with a heavy, menacing stride, holding a jagged metal pipe in his right hand. Stay back! Do not come another step closer or I will break your legs with this crowbar! Maya warned, her voice trembling but resolute as she planted her feet firmly on the concrete floor in front of the cowering children. Harrison let out a cold, patronizing laugh, his eyes gleaming with psychotic delight as he raised the metal pipe. You really think a piece of iron and a handful of stolen papers are going to save you from the reality of the world, Maya? People like the Whitmores—and people like me—write the rules, and people like you simply disappear when you become inconvenient. He lunged forward with terrifying speed, swinging the pipe in a vicious arc aimed directly at Maya's shoulder. Maya ducked instinctively, the heavy metal whistling through the air just inches above her head, but the momentum threw her off balance, sending her crashing hard against the concrete floor. Harrison stood over her, his shadow swallowing her whole as he raised the pipe for a final, decisive blow. But before the metal could descend, a bright, blinding flood of crimson and blue emergency lights suddenly strobed violently through the open kitchen floor above, painting the walls of the mansion in flashing panic. A chorus of heavy tactical boots stomped across the hardwood floors upstairs, followed by a booming, amplified voice that rattled the entire foundation of the house: State Police! Drop your weapon and put your hands on the ground where we can see them! Harrison froze, his face turning an ash-gray as the reality of the police intrusion shattered his invulnerability in a single fraction of a second.
