Chapter 8 - The Trap Closes

The sudden, heavy realization that Dr. Harrison Vance knew exactly where she was standing and what she was holding paralyzed Maya in a grip of pure terror. Before she could dart backward into the master bathroom and lock the door, Harrison moved with surprising, explosive speed, closing the distance across the bedroom floor and grabbing the edge of the medical files protruding from Maya's trembling grip. Let go, Maya hissed, pulling back with all her might, but Harrison's grip was like a steel vise, his fingers digging into the paper and tearing the top folder cleanly in half. Sarah lunged forward instantly, swinging her arm with the defense spray canister and catching Harrison squarely across the cheek and neck in a furious arc. A sharp, chemical hiss filled the room followed by a violent, choking cough as Harrison stumbled backward, dropping the torn documents onto the carpet and clutching his burning face with both hands. Run, Maya! Get the children and get out of the house now! Sarah screamed, dropping the empty canister and throwing her weight against Harrison's chest to shove him away from the doorway. Maya didn't need to be told twice; she turned on her heel, sprinted out of the master suite, and tore down the hallway toward the children's corridor, her bare feet pounding against the hardwood floor. She threw open Lily's bedroom door, rushing inside to find the eight-year-old girl huddled beneath her heavy duvet, shaking with silent sobs. Lily, honey, we need to go, right now, grab my hand, Maya urged frantically, hauling the little girl out of bed and scooping up the five-year-old twins from their adjacent room in a chaotic, breathless rush. As she hauled the three children toward the private back staircase that led down to the kitchen, a loud crash echoed from the master bedroom, followed by the sound of heavy furniture overturning and angry shouts. Maya's mind raced; the main front entrance was blocked by Harrison Vance, and the sprawling estate grounds outside were completely covered by perimeter security cameras feeding directly into systems controlled by either the doctor or Jonathan. There was only one place left to go—the underground storm shelter beneath the pantry, built specifically for the family's paranoid security needs. She herded the children down the narrow wooden stairs, slipping into the dark, cool pantry alcove while the distant sound of breaking glass echoed from the front of the mansion. Reaching behind a shelf of heavy canned goods, Maya located the concealed metal lever Sarah had mentioned in passing orientation notes, pulling downward with all her weight. A heavy, pneumatic hiss echoed through the floor as a section of the pantry shelving swung inward, revealing a steep, concrete staircase descending into absolute darkness. Get inside, stay quiet, and do not make a single sound no matter what you hear above us, Maya whispered fiercely to ten-year-old Leo, who nodded with wide, terrified eyes as he ushered his younger sisters down into the subterranean refuge. Maya followed them down, pulling the heavy steel shelter door shut behind her just as heavy, rapid footsteps echoed into the kitchen above.
