Chapter 10 - The Broken Crown of Silverport

The mud at the bottom of the gorge was thick and red, smelling of overturned earth and crushed pine needles.
Lord George Langley sat shivering upon a wet boulder, his velvet doublet ripped to shreds and caked in silt.
He was coughing violently, clutching his fractured ribs with both hands.
The sound of hooves squelching through the mud made him lift his head.
Queen Elena rode toward him, flanked by Captain Rowan and twelve mounted guards.
Their swords were drawn, their eyes cold and unforgiving.
George looked up at the young woman who held his life in her hands.
Twenty years ago, he had stepped over the corpses of her family and believed he had secured absolute power forever.
Now, he was covered in muck, his mercenary army destroyed, his family in chains, kneeling before the girl he had tried to erase.
"Elena..." George wheezed, spit and blood flecking his cracked lips.
"Spare me...
I have half a million crowns hidden in the southern vaults," George begged.
"I will give you the keys, the combinations, everything!" he pleaded.
Elena halted her horse three paces from the boulder.
She looked down at the shivering nobleman without a trace of pity in her amber eyes.
"You offer me my own father’s gold to buy your miserable life?" Elena asked, her voice ringing clear in the quiet gorge.
"I...
I served your father for ten years!" George cried out desperately.
"I kept this kingdom together after the mountain wars!" he insisted.
"You murdered my mother in her bedchamber," Elena replied, her voice dropping into a deadly whisper.
"You locked the nursery doors and ordered your archers to shoot anyone who tried to jump from the windows," she reminded him.
"You watched a six-year-old child burn alive and placed my sister’s locket upon her corpse to hide your crime," Elena stated.
George closed his eyes, unable to meet the piercing truth of her gaze.
"It was Malakar...
Malakar forced my hand!" George lied frantically.
"Malakar is dead at the bottom of the river basin," Rowan interrupted harshly, dismounting his horse.
Rowan grabbed George by the collar of his ruined doublet and hauled him to his feet.
Rowan threw the duke facedown into the deep mud before Elena’s horse.
"Bind his hands with iron wire," Elena ordered the guards.
"We are riding back to the capital," she commanded.
"He will not die in the mud of this canyon," she declared.
"He will stand trial before the people he starved in the Great Market Square," Elena decreed.
Two hours later, the royal procession approached the Northern Gates of Eldoria.
Word of the cataclysmic victory at the Devil's Throat had already reached the city through carrier riders.
Tens of thousands of common citizens—bakers, blacksmiths, seamstresses, and dockworkers—packed the stone ramparts and streets.
They had spent twenty years suffering under the brutal taxes and grain hoarding of House Langley.
When the massive iron portcullis lifted, Elena rode into the city at the head of the column.
Beside her horse walked Duke George Langley, dragged by an iron chain attached to Rowan’s saddle.
His head was bowed, his bare feet bleeding on the cobblestones, covered in the dirt of his defeat.
The crowd erupted into an earth-shattering roar.
"LONG LIVE QUEEN ELENA!" the people shouted from the rooftops.
"DOWN WITH THE TYRANTS! HAIL THE TRUE LINE!" the crowd cheered.
Flowers and green branches were thrown beneath the hooves of Elena’s warhorse.
The commoners recognized her.
Many of the kitchen workers and street sweepers pointed at her with tears running down their faces.
"That is the girl from the lower scullery!" an old washerwoman cried out joyfully.
"She cleaned our hearths! She knows our hunger! The Queen is one of us!" the people shouted.
Elena did not wave or boast.
She rode with her spine straight, her chin lifted high, acknowledging her people with quiet, dignified nods.
She led the procession directly to the Great Market Square where a raised wooden scaffold had been erected.
Upon the platform waited High Chancellor Vane, Princess Celestine, and the members of the Grand Council.
Baron Dennis stood among the councilors, his face chalk-white, his knees shaking violently beneath his robes.
Dennis had received the false report and believed the city was about to fall to Malakar.
Seeing Elena return victorious with Langley in chains shattered his sanity completely.
Elena dismounted smoothly and walked up the steps of the scaffold.
Rowan dragged George Langley up behind her, throwing the former regent onto his knees before the Chancellor.
Elena turned around and looked directly at Baron Dennis.
"Baron Dennis," Elena spoke, her voice carrying across the silent, packed square.
"Step forward," she commanded.
Dennis stumbled forward, dropping to his knees and pressing his forehead against the wooden planks.
"Your Majesty! Mercy! I was misled! I was threatened by Langley’s agents!" Dennis babbled in sheer terror.
Elena drew the intercepted pigeon cylinder from her leather pouch and dropped it onto the floor before Dennis’s eyes.
"You sold the lives of eight hundred palace guards to a butcher for thirty pieces of northern silver," Elena said.
"You broke your sacred oath before the council not six hours after swearing it," she reminded him.
Elena turned to Rowan.
"Strip Baron Dennis of his lands, his titles, and his ancestral sword," Elena decreed.
"He will share a cell with Duke Langley until their public execution at tomorrow’s noon bell," she commanded.
The crowd roared in approval, shaking their fists in the air as guards hauled Dennis away screaming.
Elena stepped to the edge of the platform and looked out over the vast sea of Eldorian citizens.
Princess Celestine walked to her sister’s side, holding the Sacred Veil of St.
Valeria in both hands.
Elena reached out and took the golden relic.
She raised the Sacred Veil high above her head into the bright afternoon sunlight.
The gold filaments caught the light, gleaming with an ethereal, blinding brilliance that illuminated the entire square.
"People of Eldoria!" Elena’s voice resonated with absolute authority across the historic square.
"The shadow that hung over our kingdom for twenty years has been shattered by the light of truth!" she proclaimed.
"No longer will the rich feast while the poor starve in the gutters!" she promised.
"No longer will traitors sell our sovereignty to foreign lords!" she declared.
"Today, we rebuild our home with iron, with truth, and with unbroken honor!" Elena shouted.
The roar of fifty thousand citizens shook the very foundations of the ancient spires.
Princess Celestine stepped forward and placed a simple, elegant circlet of pure red-gold upon Elena’s dark hair.
Captain Rowan raised his broadsword high into the air.
"ALL HAIL QUEEN ELENA, FIRST OF HER NAME, RULER OF ELDORIA!" Rowan bellowed.
"HAIL THE QUEEN!" the entire kingdom replied as one voice.

Standing upon the scaffold, looking out at the city she had scrubbed, bled for, and liberated, Elena felt the weight of the crown settle upon her brow.
The servant girl in the plain grey dress was gone forever.
