Chapter 5 - The Shadow Over the Throne

Elena moved through the chaos like a whirlwind born of two decades of suppressed fury.

Her movements were not the refined forms taught by palace fencing masters.

They were the lethal, efficient strikes of the alleyways, where hesitation meant an unmarked grave.

She deflected a blade with the heavy folds of the Sacred Veil wrapped around her arm.

The ancient gold fabric did not tear; it caught the mercenary’s blade like tough woven steel.

Elena stepped inside the attacker’s reach and drove the pommel of her sword into his nose.

Bone shattered, and the man dropped instantly to the floor.

The surviving loyal guards, inspired by the sheer ferocity of their long-lost princess, rallied around her.

"Stand with the Queen!" Rowan bellowed, ignoring the blood soaking his tunic as he swung his broadsword.

The royal guards formed a wedge, pushing the northern mercenaries back toward the center of the hall.

Aristocrats watched from beneath the banquet tables in absolute disbelief.

The girl they had dismissed as a kitchen servant was carving through armed killers like an experienced legionnaire.

Lord George Langley began to retreat toward the heavy wooden doors.

"Cowards!" Victoria screamed at the mercenaries.

"There are dozens of you and only one girl! Kill her!" she raged.

Elena heard the duchess’s shriek above the din of combat.

Her amber eyes locked onto Victoria with lethal focus.

Elena shoved a bleeding soldier aside and advanced directly toward the matriarch of House Langley.

Victoria saw the bloody blade in Elena's hand and finally understood the depths of her mistake.

She tried to turn and flee, but her heavy velvet train caught on a fallen candelabra.

Victoria fell hard onto the marble, her jewels scattering across the bloody flagstones.

Elena closed the distance in three long strides.

She planted her boot firmly onto Victoria's silk-clad chest, pinning the duchess to the floor.

Elena pressed the cold point of the stolen sword directly against Victoria’s pale throat.

A thin bead of red immediately appeared beneath the blade.

"Order them to drop their steel," Elena said, her voice dropping to a terrifyingly calm register.

Victoria gasped for air, the weight of Elena’s boot crushing her lungs.

"George...

help me!" Victoria wheezed, looking toward her husband.

Lord George stood near the side exit, his hand on the iron latch.

He looked at his wife pinned beneath the sword.

He looked at Elena’s eyes, devoid of mercy.

Then, without saying a single word, George turned the handle, slipped through the door, and locked it behind him.

He abandoned his wife and daughter to save his own life.

Clarissa Langley screamed from the corner, watching her father vanish into the darkness.

Victoria’s face twisted in profound, agonizing betrayal.

"Your house was built on greed, Victoria," Elena whispered, pressing the steel just a fraction deeper.

"And like all things built on greed, it abandons you the moment the cost becomes real," Elena added.

"Call them off," Elena repeated.

Victoria swallowed hard, feeling the cold steel vibrating against her vocal cords.

"Stop!" Victoria croaked, raising her trembling hands.

"Yield! In the name of House Langley, yield your weapons!" she cried out.

The remaining eight mercenaries paused.

They saw their employer pinned beneath a sword and their paymaster fleeing down the service corridor.

Without another word, they threw their notched blades onto the stone and raised their hands in surrender.

The clash of weapons finally died away.

The Great Hall returned to a heavy, suffocating silence, broken only by the groans of the wounded.

Elena did not remove her boot from Victoria's chest.

She looked back toward the dais.

Princess Celestine was standing tall now, wiping the tears from her pale cheeks.

Rowan leaned against a marble pillar, his hand pressed against his wounded shoulder, but a grim smile was on his face.

"Chancellor Vane," Elena called out across the silent hall.

The old Chancellor stepped out from behind the altar, his hands trembling as he straightened his robes.

"Y-yes, Your Grace?" Vane stuttered.

"Have the palace gates locked immediately," Elena ordered.

"Deploy the city watch to hunt down Lord George Langley before he reaches the northern docks," she commanded.

"And place Lady Victoria and Clarissa Langley in the deep cells beneath the western tower," she added.

Victoria gasped, tears of rage finally breaking through her aristocratic mask.

"The deep cells? I am a duchess of the realm!" Victoria protested.

"You are a traitor caught with drawn steel against the Crown," Elena replied coldly.

Elena lifted her boot from Victoria's chest and stepped back.

Two royal guards immediately grabbed Victoria by her arms and hauled her roughly to her feet.

They stripped the sapphire rings from her fingers and dragged her across the blood-soaked floor.

Clarissa followed, weeping uncontrollably, escorted by two more armed soldiers.

Elena turned toward the assembled nobility.

Dozens of counts, barons, and wealthy merchants stared at her in terrified awe.

She was covered in soot, sweat, and the blood of their enemies.

Her unbleached linen dress was torn at the shoulder, revealing the pale scar from an old burn.

Yet, holding the Sacred Veil and the King's blade, she looked more royal than any sovereign who had sat upon the throne in fifty years.

Elena walked slowly back toward the dais.

She climbed the marble stairs and stood beside Celestine.

She raised the red-gold ring high into the air so every noble in the room could see the dragon seal.

"The reign of the usurpers is over," Elena proclaimed.

"Eldoria will no longer be ruled by whispers, bribes, and murdered children," she declared.

"Those who stand with the true line will find justice," she promised.

"Those who profited from our family's blood will find retribution," she warned.

Captain Rowan raised his bloody sword one more time.

"All hail Queen Elena!" Rowan shouted with every breath remaining in his chest.

This time, it was not just the guards who answered.

Count Julian dropped to one knee.

Then the Chancellor knelt.

Within seconds, all five hundred nobles in the Great Hall fell to their knees upon the cold marble.

Princess Celestine looked at her sister and bowed her head in willing, total submission.

Elena looked out over the sea of bowed heads.

She had reclaimed her birthright.

She had avenged the fire of her childhood.

Yet she knew that Lord George was riding north, where twenty thousand hardened mercenaries waited under the Langley banner.

The battle for the palace was won.
