Chapter 6 - The Phantom’s Retribution

Back inside the rusted sanctuary of Bell Automotive Repair, the scent of motor oil and gun-cleaning solvent hung heavy in the air.

Matteo DeLuca stood shirtless in front of a cracked bathroom mirror, wiping dried sweat and road grime from his muscular torso.

His skin was no longer the deathly, frozen gray of the morgue; the rich, olive tone of his Mediterranean ancestry had returned with full vigor.

The neurotoxin had completely washed out of his system, leaving behind an electric, hyper-focused adrenaline that electrified his veins.

He rolled his broad shoulders, testing the flexibility of his joints and feeling the lethal power return to his sinewy forearms.

Nora walked into the back office, carrying a rusted metal toolbox she had pried open using an old crowbar.

Inside the toolbox lay her father’s hidden emergency cache: three Glock 19 semi-automatic pistols, ten fully loaded magazines, and a box of tactical hollow-point ammunition.

Matteo looked at the weapons, a cold, predatory smile finally touching his lips for the first time in twenty-four hours.

"Thomas Bell always was a prudent man," Matteo remarked, picking up one of the pistols with the practiced ease of an apex predator.

He racked the slide with a single, fluid motion, inspecting the chamber before releasing it with a sharp, mechanical snap.

"Do you know how to fire a weapon, Nora?" Matteo asked, looking up at her with piercing dark eyes.

"My father took me to the upstate shooting ranges every summer when I was a teenager," Nora replied, her chin held high.

"He said a girl who grows up surrounded by wolves needs to know how to put a bullet between their eyes."

Matteo handed her the second Glock, his large, scarred fingers brushing against her delicate, bruised knuckles.

"Then remember this rule when the time comes," Matteo said, his voice dropping into a low, deadly register.

"You do not hesitate, you do not question your right to survive, and you never close your eyes when you pull the trigger."

"Santino's men will not show you mercy because you are a woman or because you wore a maid's apron."

"To them, you are the loose thread that can unravel their entire criminal conspiracy."

Nora accepted the heavy polymer pistol, sliding the magazine into the grip until it clicked with reassuring finality.

"I didn't save you so I could cower in a corner, Don Matteo," Nora said, her voice steady and resolute.

"Santino murdered my father to get to your family."

"I want him to know that Thomas Bell's daughter was the one who handed you the gun that ends his life."

A spark of profound respect and dangerous admiration flickered across Matteo’s dark features.

For years, he had been surrounded by subservient sycophants, treacherous capos, and women who only cared for his wealth and power.

Yet here, in a freezing, grease-stained garage at the edge of the world, a discarded maid stood beside him with the heart of a lioness.

Before Matteo could reply, the faint, high-pitched crunch of tires over frozen gravel echoed from the exterior alleyway.

Matteo’s senses instantly sharpened into absolute combat readiness.

He moved to the small frosted window overlooking the wharf, parting the dirty plastic blinds with the tip of his pistol barrel.

Three black Cadillac Escalades with tinted windows had entered the abandoned industrial lot, parking in a defensive semi-circle outside the garage doors.

Santino’s tracking specialists had evidently cross-referenced traffic cameras and flagged Nora’s station wagon entering the wharf district.

Six men stepped out of the vehicles, dressed in black tactical windbreakers and wielding suppressed submachine guns.

Leading the squad was Marco Varga, his heavy face twisted into a scowl of sadistic anticipation.

"They found us," Nora whispered, her breath hitching slightly as she racked the slide of her Glock.

"They found my father's garage."

"They didn't find us, Nora," Matteo replied, his voice completely calm, devoid of fear, and vibrating with absolute lethality.

"They walked into an execution chamber."

Matteo reached over to the wall and threw the main electrical breaker switch, instantly plunging the entire repair shop into pitch-black darkness.

The only illumination came from the pale, gray winter light filtering through the high, dirty skylights twenty feet above.

"Stay low, stay behind the engine blocks near the hydraulic lift, and do not fire until I initiate," Matteo whispered into her ear.

His warm breath brushed against her skin, sending an unexpected shiver through her spine before he melted into the shadows like a wraith.

Outside, the heavy steel pedestrian door was kicked off its rusted hinges with a thunderous crash.

Marco and three armed gunmen filed into the dark garage, their tactical weapon lights cutting through the dust-filled air in erratic beams.

"Spread out!" Marco barked, his voice echoing off the corrugated metal walls.

"The girl is in here somewhere, and if the boss is still breathing, put two in his skull before he can stand up!"

The first gunman swept his flashlight beam across the rusted tool racks, stepping cautiously past an old cast-iron engine crane.

From the ceiling rafters above, a massive shadow dropped silently behind him.

Matteo landed without a sound, wrapping his powerful forearm around the gunman’s neck in a lethal sleeper hold while simultaneously twisting his head ninety degrees.

A sharp, sickening snap echoed through the cavernous room, and the gunman went completely limp.

Before the body could hit the concrete, Matteo caught the falling submachine gun and fired a three-round suppressed burst into the second gunman advancing down the oil pit.

The rounds struck the man’s chest with wet, hollow thuds, driving him backward into a stack of discarded tires.

"Ambush! He's alive! He's in the shadows!" the third gunman screamed, firing blindly toward the rafters in hysterical panic.

Nora, crouched behind the massive steel block of an old diesel engine, saw the gunman’s flashlight beam sweeping directly toward her position.

Her hands shook for a fraction of a second as the man leveled his weapon straight at her face.

*You do not hesitate,* Matteo’s voice echoed in her mind.

Nora stepped out from behind the steel engine block, raised her Glock with both hands, and squeezed the trigger twice.

The loud cracks of the unsuppressed 9mm rounds shattered the silence of the garage.

Both bullets struck the gunman in the center of his chest, tearing through his light tactical vest and dropping him instantly to the floor.

Across the smoke-filled room, Marco Varga spun around, his weapon light finally illuminating Don Matteo DeLuca standing in the center aisle.

Matteo stood tall, completely unbothered by the gunfire, holding a smoking pistol with terrifying poise.

Marco’s face drained of every ounce of blood, his weapon trembling in his massive hands as if he were staring at a ghost dragged straight out of purgatory.

"Don... Don Matteo..." Marco stammered, taking a stumbling step backward toward the shattered doorway.

"You were dead... Vance swore your heart stopped..."

"My heart did stop, Marco," Matteo said, taking slow, deliberate steps forward, his voice sounding like thunder rolling across an open grave.

"And when I was in the dark, I heard every single word Santino whispered into my ear."

"I heard how you were going to burn my body, how you locked my sister away, and how you sold my family to the Moretti syndicate."

Marco frantically tried to raise his submachine gun, but Matteo moved with supernatural, blinding speed.

A single gunshot rang out, echoing through the rafters of Blackwood Wharf like the toll of a funeral bell.

Marco’s weapon clattered to the bloodstained concrete, followed closely by his heavy body, clutching his shattered shoulder in agonizing torment.

Matteo stepped over the groaning enforcer, placing his heavy leather boot directly onto Marco’s throat with crushing pressure.

He looked back toward the shadows near the hydraulic lift, extending his hand toward Nora.

"Step into the light, Nora Bell," Matteo commanded softly, his dark eyes glowing with an ancient, untamable fire.

"The first chapter of our war is finished."

"Now, we go take back my city."CHAPTER 7 — The Interrogation of Blood and Iron

The icy draft howling through the shattered garage doors carried the sharp tang of gunpowder and copper.

Marco Varga lay sprawled across the frozen concrete floor, his massive chest heaving with shallow, agonizing breaths.

Blood pooled beneath his torn tactical jacket, steaming faintly against the sub-zero floor of the auto shop.

Matteo DeLuca maintained the crushing pressure of his boot heel directly against Marco’s shattered collarbone.

He did not shout, nor did he display the wild, frenzied rage of an insecure gangster.

His calm was that of an ancient predator who had already calculated every conceivable outcome of the hunt.

"You have five minutes before the shock shuts down your renal system, Marco," Matteo said, his voice as smooth and deadly as silk draped over a razor blade.

"You can spend those final minutes begging for a quick death, or you can spend them buying yourself an ambulance."

Marco coughed, spraying crimson flecks across the white snow that had drifted across the garage threshold.

"Santino will kill me anyway, Don Matteo," Marco wheezed, his eyes rolling back in excruciating pain.

"If he finds out I talked to a ghost, he’ll feed me piece by piece into the Jersey rendering plant."

Nora stepped forward into the dim light of the hanging mechanic’s lamp, holding her Glock with a steady two-handed grip.

Her knuckles were no longer shaking; the raw fear that had gripped her at the estate had solidified into pure, cold focus.

"Santino isn't here to save you, Marco," Nora said, her voice cutting through the damp darkness with absolute clarity.

"And the man standing over you is the only one who decides whether you leave this wharf in a body bag or on a stretcher."

Marco looked up at Nora, shock and humiliation contorting his scarred, sweat-drenched features.

"The maid," Marco rasped, a pathetic sneer dying on his cracked lips.

"You brought down my entire strike team with a damn house cleaner."

Matteo shifted his weight slightly, driving the heel of his boot a quarter-inch deeper into the shattered bone.

Marco let out a strangled, high-pitched scream that bounced violently off the corrugated metal walls.

"She is the daughter of Thomas Bell," Matteo corrected coldly, his gaze burning straight into Marco's soul.

"She possesses more courage, honor, and loyalty in her little finger than your entire bloodline could muster in three generations."

"Now, answer my questions before I let her empty the rest of that magazine into your kneecap."

Marco gasped, his vision swimming as the agony peaked.

"Ask," Marco choked out.

"Ask whatever you want, Don Matteo, just take your boot off my chest."

Matteo eased the pressure by a fraction, keeping the muzzle of his suppressed weapon aimed squarely between the hitman’s eyes.

"Where is my sister Sofia?" Matteo demanded.

"Santino sent four cars to her estate in Westchester," Marco confessed, words tumbling out in a desperate, breathless rush.

"They haven't touched her yet because they needed the morning papers to confirm your death certificate first."

"The hit is scheduled for nine o'clock tonight under the guise of an accidental carbon monoxide leak from her generator."

"Santino wants the DeLuca bloodline wiped clean so the Five Families Commission can ratify his title without an heir contesting the wills."

Nora felt a chill run down her spine that had nothing to do with the winter wind outside.

"And Dr. Vance?" Matteo asked, his jaw tightening into iron.

"Where is the doctor who sold his Hippocratic oath for Santino's dirty cash?"

"Vance is packing his bags at his private penthouse on Riverside Drive," Marco whispered, trembling with blood loss.

"He received two million dollars in untraceable bearer bonds and a private flight ticket out of Teterboro Airport scheduled for noon tomorrow."

"He holds the encrypted thumb drive containing the fabricated toxicology reports and Santino’s voice recordings."

"Santino doesn't know Vance made backup recordings to protect his own skin if the syndicate turned on him."

Matteo glanced at Nora, sharing a silent, instantaneous calculation.

The corrupt doctor was not just a traitor; he was the primary witness who held the absolute physical proof of Santino's regicide.

"Who else backed Santino at the high table?" Matteo pressed, leaning down until his shadow consumed Marco completely.

"Tell me who bought into the usurpation, Marco."

"Don Moretti," Marco gasped, his strength visibly failing as his skin faded to a sickly ash-gray.

"Moretti supplied the offshore funds and the untraceable paralytic compound from a private laboratory in Zurich."

"In exchange, Santino promised to hand over forty percent of the Brooklyn shipping terminals and all the inland narcotics corridors."

"They are hosting a victory banquet tonight at the Grand Continental ballroom to announce the merger under the new syndicate banner."

"Every boss on the Eastern Seaboard will be sitting at that table, Don Matteo."

"If you walk into that room, you walk into the mouth of thirty loaded guns."

Matteo stepped back, lifting his boot off Marco’s chest with clinical indifference.

"They think I am a dead man, Marco," Matteo said softly.

"And dead men do not knock before they enter."

Matteo turned to Nora, his expression unreadable beneath the harsh glare of the bare lightbulb.

"Tie him to the hydraulic lift with industrial zip-ties and call an anonymous emergency dispatcher from a burner telephone," Matteo instructed.

"Leave him alive so the police find him with the tactical weapons registered to Santino's private shell corporation."

"Let Santino wonder why his premier executioner is sitting in handcuffs while the news stations begin asking questions."

Nora immediately set to work, utilizing the heavy nylon straps from her father’s crane hoist to bind Marco securely to the steel pillar.

She showed no hesitation, no revulsion, and no pity for the man who had plotted to burn Matteo’s body in an industrial furnace.

As she pulled the final knot taut, Matteo stood near the workbench, loading fresh hollow-point rounds into their spare magazines.

"We have less than three hours before Sofia's security perimeter goes completely dark," Matteo stated, slipping two magazines into his coat.

"We move on Westchester first."

"We pull my sister out of the fire, and then we take the doctor's scalp."

Nora wiped grease and snow from her forehead, tucking her weapon securely into her belt.

"I'm driving," Nora said, locking eyes with the mafia king.

"My father taught me every back road between this wharf and the Westchester county line that bypasses the highway toll cameras."

Matteo looked at her, a faint, rare glimmer of genuine warmth breaking through his icy armor.

"Then let's go, Nora Bell," he murmured.

"Let's show these traitors what happens when they cross the wrong family."
