Chapter 9 - The Broken Scalpel

The luxury high-rise condominium at 400 Riverside Drive rose like a glittering spire of glass and steel above the frozen Hudson River.

On the forty-second floor, the private penthouse belonging to Dr. Julian Vance was illuminated by the warm, amber glow of recessed lighting.

Inside the cavernous living room, expensive leather luggage lay open across Italian marble tables.

Dr. Vance was frantically packing stacks of hundred-dollar bills, Swiss bearer bonds, and gold bullion into reinforced aluminum briefcases.

He kept checking the Rolex on his wrist every thirty seconds, wiping beads of cold sweat from his thinning hairline.

He was a man who understood the arithmetic of survival in the criminal underworld.

Santino Rizzo had promised him two million dollars and immunity, but Vance was not an idiot.

Once the coronation banquet at the Grand Continental concluded and the merger with Moretti was sealed, loose ends would be tied up in lead.

Vance intended to be aboard a private chartered Gulfstream en route to Zurich before Santino remembered to send a hitman to his apartment.

He grabbed his passport, three burner phones, and a black leather notebook containing the offshore account numbers.

As he turned toward the private elevator foyer to make his exit, the elevator chime sounded with a soft, cheerful ring.

The brushed-steel doors slid open, revealing three figures stepping silently into the penthouse foyer.

At the center stood Don Matteo DeLuca, dressed in a tailored charcoal wool suit, his dark overcoat open to reveal an unholstered pistol.

Flanking him were Sofia DeLuca, her arms crossed over her chest with icy detachment, and Nora Bell, holding a silenced weapon at her side.

Dr. Vance’s knees instantly turned to water.

The heavy aluminum briefcase slipped from his hands, crashing onto the marble floor and spilling stacks of banded hundred-dollar bills across the rug.

The doctor staggered backward until his spine collided with the floor-to-ceiling glass window overlooking the Hudson.

"No... no, this is impossible..." Vance stammered, his face turning the color of curdled milk as he clutched his chest in genuine panic.

"You were clinically dead... your heart had ceased electrical conduction..."

"The neuro-paralytic compound was supposed to induce irreversible myocardial necrosis within two hours..."

Matteo took slow, measured steps across the vast living room, his leather shoes clicking rhythmically against the stone.

Each step sounded like a death sentence echoing in Vance’s ears.

"You forgot one critical detail in your medical calculations, Julian," Matteo said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, velvet murmur.

"You forgot that human beings are not just biological machines that submit to your chemical formulas."

"And you forgot that loyalty still exists in places you were too arrogant to look."

Vance’s terrified eyes darted toward Nora, recognizing the maid who had served him coffee outside the medical suite less than eighteen hours ago.

"You... the little girl with the tray..." Vance whispered, his voice cracking into a pathetic, high-pitched whimper.

"You took the antidote from my surgical kit..."

"I did," Nora answered, stepping forward into the light, her eyes colder than the winter river forty floors below.

"And I heard every word you whispered to Santino near the sideboard about cellular breakdown and cold preservation."

"You violated your oath as a physician to murder an innocent man who paid your salary for ten years."

Vance fell to his knees, clasping his trembling hands together in desperate, humiliating supplication.

"Matteo, please! Listen to me!" Vance pleaded, tears streaming down his flabby cheeks.

"Santino threatened my family! He said he would torture my daughter in Boston if I didn't administer the compound!"

"I had no choice! I am a doctor, not a soldier!"

Sofia DeLuca let out a sharp, mocking laugh that cut through the doctor’s lies like broken glass.

"Your daughter has been living in Paris under an assumed trust fund for three years, Julian," Sofia revealed, pulling a tablet from her bag.

"We audited your personal accounts while we were driving into the city."

"Santino didn't threaten you; he wired four million dollars to your numbered account in the Cayman Islands three weeks before you poisoned my brother."

"You sold out the man who saved you from a federal malpractice indictment five years ago for thirty pieces of silver."

Matteo stopped three feet in front of the kneeling physician, looking down at him with profound, absolute disgust.

"Where is the master drive, Julian?" Matteo asked quietly.

"The backup recordings you made of Santino's planning sessions at the marina."

Vance swallowed hard, realizing that every avenue of deception was completely closed.

"In the safe... behind the oil painting in the study," Vance choked out, pointing a trembling finger toward the adjoining room.

"The combination is eighteen, forty-four, zero-two."

"Everything is on that drive, Matteo! Every conversation between Santino and Don Moretti!"

"The orders to kill your father... the plan to eliminate Sofia... the coordinates of the smuggling routes... all of it!"

"Take it! Take the money, take the bonds, just let me get on my plane!"

Nora walked into the study, returning ninety seconds later with a heavy titanium-cased USB drive and a stack of notarized documents.

She handed the drive to Sofia, who immediately plugged it into her encrypted tablet to verify the files.

"It's all here, Matteo," Sofia confirmed after scanning the file directory, her eyes blazing with cold triumph.

"Audio logs, bank wire receipts, shipping manifests, and high-definition surveillance footage from Santino's private yacht."

"This isn't just enough to destroy Santino within the syndicate; it's enough to dismantle the entire Moretti network across three states."

Matteo looked down at the trembling doctor, who was weeping openly on the Persian rug.

"You wanted to fly to Zurich, Julian," Matteo said softly, stepping back toward the private elevator.

"You will not be boarding that flight."

"Are you... are you going to kill me?" Vance whimpered, shrinking against the glass.

"Death is far too quick a mercy for a man who traps his patients in frozen tombs while they are still awake," Matteo replied.

"Nora, hand me the satellite telephone."

Matteo dialed an eleven-digit number, putting the speakerphone on for the entire room to hear.

The line clicked, and a stern, gravelly voice answered on the second ring.

"Special Agent Reynolds, Federal Bureau of Investigation, Organized Crime Division."

Matteo spoke with absolute, icy precision.

"Agent Reynolds, this is an anonymous courier delivering a gift."

"Dr. Julian Vance is currently located at Penthouse B, 400 Riverside Drive, surrounded by six million dollars in illegal bearer bonds and comprehensive evidence detailing thirty years of Moretti syndicate racketeering."

"He is fully prepared to surrender and testify under the federal witness protection program if your tactical team arrives within twenty minutes."

Matteo terminated the call before the stunned federal agent could reply, tossing the phone onto the glass coffee table.

"By tomorrow morning, Julian, Santino will know that you turned state’s evidence against him," Matteo said with a grim smile.

"And the federal penitentiary in Florence, Colorado, will be the only place on earth where his assassins cannot reach you."

"Enjoy the rest of your life behind concrete walls."

As the elevator doors closed, leaving the disgraced physician alone with his spilled millions and the approaching sirens of federal law enforcement, Matteo turned to Nora.

"Now," Matteo said, adjusting the cuffs of his tailored shirt.

"It is time to attend Santino’s coronation banquet."
