Chapter 5 - The Vault of Broken Oaths

The sub-basement of the Bellona Resort lay eighty feet beneath the desert bedrock.

It was a labyrinth of reinforced concrete corridors, air-filtration ducts, and industrial vaults that smelled of oil and cold limestone.

Here, far beneath the flashing neon slot machines and roaring craps tables, the real power of the Vale dynasty was preserved.

At the end of a dimly lit service corridor stood Vault B-4.

It had once been used by Julian Vale to store unregistered cash and confidential documents before the gaming laws were modernized.

Now, it was completely soundproof, isolated from cellular reception, and monitored only by closed-circuit analog cameras.

Inside the vault, Richard Hale sat on a cold steel folding chair beneath a single overhead fluorescent tube.

His designer necktie was unknotted, his gray hair was disheveled, and his hands trembled uncontrollably against his knees.

Two armed security operatives in black tactical uniforms stood silently by the reinforced steel door.

The heavy door swung open, screeching slightly against the concrete floor.

Dante walked in first, his jacket removed, his white shirt sleeves rolled up neatly to his forearms.

Sienna walked in directly behind him, her face an unreadable mask of ice and absolute judgment.

Richard looked up, his watery eyes darting between Dante and Sienna like a trapped rat seeking an escape hole.

"Dante... please," Richard croaked, his voice cracking with dry terror.

"You have known me my entire life, Richard," Dante said softly, pulling up a second steel chair and sitting directly opposite him.

"You were at my eighth birthday party."

"You sat at my father's bedside when he died of pancreatic cancer."

"I trusted you with every contract, every trust, and every family secret."

Richard dropped his head, tears spilling down his wrinkled cheeks.

"You don't understand what they have on me, Dante..."

"Who has something on you, Richard?"

"I couldn't stop it," the lawyer sobbed, his chest heaving.

"They found the accounts in the Bahamas... the money I borrowed from the pension reserve twelve years ago..."

"I don't care about your stolen money, Richard," Dante interrupted, his voice dropping into a deadly whisper.

"Who owns Obsidian Crest Holdings?"

Richard flinched as if Dante had struck him across the face.

"Tell him, Richard," Sienna commanded from behind Dante, her voice cutting through the vault like a surgeon's scalpel.

"Tell him who paid you to leak the default notice to First National this morning."

Richard looked up at Sienna, his lips trembling violently.

"Your father was a good man, Sienna... Thomas was an honest developer..."

"Do not speak my father's name!" she snapped, her eyes blazing with raw fury.

"You helped destroy him!"

"I didn't want to!" Richard cried out, rocking back and forth on the steel chair.

"It wasn't Julian! You have to believe me, Dante! Your father didn't want to destroy Cross Hospitality!"

Dante leaned forward, gripping Richard's collar with one hand and lifting him off the chair.

"What did you just say?"

"Julian wanted to partner with Thomas Cross!" Richard confessed in a frantic torrent of words.

"Julian had prepared a joint venture agreement to refinance Thomas's bank loans!"

"Julian was going to provide forty million dollars in private equity to save Cross Hospitality!"

Sienna froze, her breath catching in her throat as she stared at the trembling lawyer.

"Then why did Vale Entertainment buy my father's assets out of bankruptcy?" she whispered.

"Because Victor found out!" Richard wept, gripping Dante's forearms.

"Victor Vale found out about the deal!"

"Victor had borrowed twenty million dollars from an organized crime syndicate in Chicago without your father's knowledge."

"Victor was drowning in debt."

"Victor went to First West Bank and showed them falsified financial audits showing Cross Hospitality was insolvent."

"Victor forced the bank to pull the credit line!"

Dante felt a cold, sickening sensation pool in the pit of his stomach.

"And my father?" Dante demanded, his voice shaking with suppressed rage.

"What did my father do?"

"Julian was furious," Richard sobbed.

"Julian threatened to kill Victor with his bare hands."

"But Victor had already pledged the Vale family’s original casino licenses as collateral to the Chicago lenders!"

"If Cross didn't go into bankruptcy, the Chicago syndicate was going to foreclose on the Vale family's entire operation!"

"Julian had to buy the Cross assets to pay off Victor’s debt and save his own children from being murdered in their beds!"

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Sienna stood frozen in the center of the vault, her entire worldview crumbling beneath her feet.

For fifteen years, she had lived with a singular, burning hatred for Julian Vale and his son.

She had spent her youth studying finance, building a hedge fund, and sharpening her mind into a weapon to dismantle the Vale dynasty.

And now, the truth revealed that both their fathers had been puppets dancing on strings pulled by a dead monster.

"Victor died six years ago, Richard," Dante said, his voice deadly quiet.

"The car crash outside Reno."

"His body was identified through dental records."

Richard looked up at Dante, his eyes filled with pure, unadulterated horror.

"Victor didn't die, Dante."

Dante’s hand slowly released Richard’s collar.

The lawyer slumped back onto the steel chair, covering his face with his trembling hands.

"The car was burned beyond recognition," Richard whispered into his palms.

"The dental records were provided by a private clinic in Mexico that Victor had purchased three weeks earlier."

"Victor staged his death to escape an impending federal indictment for tax fraud."

"He took thirty million dollars in cash and disappeared into South America."

"And now?" Sienna asked, her voice shaking with disbelief.

"Where is he now?"

"He came back eight months ago," Richard confessed, looking up with haunted eyes.

"He contacted me through an encrypted satellite line."

"He owns Obsidian Crest Holdings."

"He is the one buying the junior debt."

"He knows Dante’s liquidity is trapped in the Phoenix expansion."

"He used Sienna’s debt acquisition to trigger the public default."

"Victor wants the Bellona, Dante."

"He has always believed that Julian stole the casino empire from him."

Before Dante could process the revelation, the single fluorescent light overhead flickered violently and died.

Complete, impenetrable darkness swallowed the vault.

A second later, the deep, shuddering groan of the casino’s emergency auxiliary generators echoed through the concrete walls.

The red emergency floodlights hummed to life, bathing the room in a bloody, surreal glow.

From the corridor outside, two muffled gunshots cracked through the heavy air.

Followed by the sound of boots running across the polished concrete.
