Chapter 3 - The Empty Throne and the High-Society Disaster

The grandfather clock in the corner of the lobby struck twelve with a deep, resonant chime.
The sound signaled the official opening of the Valente Crown’s world-renowned Grand Dining Salon.
Under normal circumstances, the air would already be fragrant with white truffles, roasted garlic, and aged balsamic reduction.
A team of fourteen sommeliers would be decanting vintage Barolo at pristine linen-draped stations.
Instead, the vast room smelled only of cold marble, cleaning disinfectant, and the metallic tang of dried blood.
The heavy exterior revolving doors began to push inward.
The first guests arrived precisely on time.
Senator Thomas Caldwell stepped inside, shaking raindrops from his bespoke cashmere umbrella, followed by his entourage of campaign donors.
Behind him came Lady Beatrice Vance, the matriarch of the city's historical preservation trust, along with four prominent private investors.
They were expecting to be greeted by Daniel Cho’s warm smile and an army of immaculately groomed valets.
Instead, they walked into a ghost house.
The luggage carts sat unattended by the glass entryways.
The check-in counter was completely deserted, save for a mountain of plastic employee badges and shredded paper.
The computerized phone system had begun emitting a continuous, shrill busy signal that bounced off the vaulted ceilings.
Senator Caldwell frowned, looking around in utter bewilderment.
""Where the hell is the concierge?"" the politician muttered, stepping toward the abandoned desk.
""Daniel? Is anyone working here?""
Luca stood in the shadow of the mezzanine pillar, his jaw locked so hard the muscles in his cheek twitched violently.
Beside him, Sophia was clutching a tablet computer, her fingers flying desperately across the screen.
""Every agency turned us down, Luca,"" Sophia whispered, panic bleeding into every syllable.
""I offered triple wages to Apex Hospitality Services.""
""And?"" Luca demanded through gritted teeth.
""The regional director laughed in my ear,"" Sophia said, tears of humiliation welling in her eyes.
""He told me that within ten minutes of your little demonstration in the kitchen, Leo Bennett posted his broken face to the national culinary network.""
""Every certified line cook, banquet server, and dishwasher within a fifty-mile radius has put the Valente Crown on an emergency boycott list.""
Luca’s fists clenched at his sides.
""They think they can bully me with social media posts?""
""They aren't bullying you,"" Maya Ellis said, stepping out from the corridor behind them.
She held a silver thermos of black coffee she had brought with her, taking a slow, unhurried sip.
""They are exercising their only leverage.""
""A business cannot run on leverage without capital,"" Luca growled.
""And capital cannot carry a seventy-pound tray of roast beef to Table Four,"" Maya countered instantly.
Out in the lobby, the situation was rapidly devolving into an unprecedented public disaster.
Lady Beatrice Vance pushed open the doors to the main dining room, expecting to find her reserved window table prepared with freshly cut orchids.
Instead, she found forty empty tables with unlaid silverware, cold bread baskets from breakfast, and dead silence.
A shriek echoed from the kitchen access corridor.
One of the junior investors had wandered back toward the prep area looking for water, only to discover the pool of coagulated blood by the oven.
""There's blood on the floor!"" the man shouted, rushing back into the lobby with wild eyes.
""There's blood everywhere, and nobody is in the kitchen!""
Senator Caldwell’s face went purple with outrage as he spotted Luca standing by the mezzanine stairs.
""Luca! What kind of sick circus are you running here?"" Caldwell barked, marching across the marble.
""I brought six overseas banking partners to this luncheon to close a municipal bond deal!""
""There isn't a single person here to take our coats, let alone serve a meal!""
Luca descended the stairs, forcing his expression into a mask of smooth, sociopathic composure.
""A minor staffing dispute, Senator,"" Luca lied smoothly.
""Our executive dining wing is undergoing an unscheduled sanitation overhaul.""
""Don't feed me garbage, Valente,"" Caldwell snapped, gesturing furiously at the deserted front desk.
""Your entire building is abandoned.""
""The street outside is packed with your staff holding up signs.""
""News vans just pulled up to the curb.""
Luca froze, his eyes darting toward the floor-to-ceiling street windows.
Across the four-lane boulevard, two major news broadcast trucks had already extended their satellite towers into the gray sky.
Reporters with microphones were interviewing Daniel Cho, who was calmly displaying the bloody kitchen rag Leo had used to hold his face together.
Behind them, hundreds of hotel workers stood in disciplined, silent rows, their coats buttoned, their faces stone-cold.
They weren't screaming or throwing rocks.
They were simply standing there, letting the media document the reality of the Valente empire.
""This is a shakedown,"" Luca whispered, his voice shaking with suppressed rage.
""No, Luca,"" Maya Ellis murmured, walking down the stairs to stand directly beside the furious senator.
""This is what happens when a tyrant forgets that bricks don't cook food, and marble doesn't scrub toilets.""
Sophia walked down behind her, holding up the tablet screen for Luca to see.
The display showed an automated alert from the city’s licensing and safety division.
Due to an unverified report of physical violence on a food-preparation premises, the Department of Public Health had suspended the Valente Crown’s food service license effective immediately.
If the hotel could not present a fully compliant, fully staffed operational audit within seven days, the building's operating charter would be revoked.
May you like
And without an operating charter, the $40 million construction bond held by the international syndicate would default automatically.
The empire Luca had built on brutality was thirty seconds away from vanishing into thin air.
