Chapter 9 - The Sabotage in the Dark

While the debate raged inside the warm basement of St. Jude’s, darkness swallowed the waterfront district.

A dense river fog crept over the docks, wrapping the Valente Crown Hotel in cold gray mist.

Inside the shuttered luxury landmark, the only light came from the emergency exit signs casting a faint red glow across the lobby.

Up on the twelfth floor, inside the private executive suite, Sophia Valente sat before a bank of monitors.

Beside her stood Maya Ellis, reviewing the secondary filings required to finalize the employee equity transfer.

""The state registrar approved the emergency restructuring paperwork,"" Maya said, stamping the final page.

""Once the workers vote in favor, Frank Moretti’s legal claim is permanently dead.""

Sophia looked out the floor-to-ceiling windows toward the dark river, her hands trembling around a mug of cold tea.

""Frank isn't a man who accepts defeat from a piece of paper, Maya,"" Sophia murmured.

""I grew up around these animals.""

""When they realize they can't steal a business through the courts, they burn it down for the insurance money.""

As if answering her fear, the overhead lights flickered violently twice.

A sharp electrical pop echoed from deep within the building's infrastructure.

Then the entire twelve-story building plunged into absolute, pitch-black darkness.

The computer monitors died instantly.

The low, reassuring hum of the commercial air handling units sputtered and ceased.

Even the red emergency exit signs went dark, signaling that the primary backup generators in the basement had failed to engage.

Maya turned on the flashlight on her mobile phone, sweeping the beam across the office.

""The backup system has four independent diesel circuits,"" Maya said, her voice sharp with sudden alarm.

""A power outage wouldn't kill the emergency lighting unless the breaker panel was manually cut.""

From somewhere deep within the bowels of the building, three distinct metallic thuds resonated through the ventilation ducts.

Then came the faint, terrifying smell of burning diesel fuel and accelerant.

Sophia dropped her mug, the ceramic shattering on the floorboards.

""They're inside,"" Sophia whispered in horror.

Down in the basement mechanical room, four men wearing tactical respirators and dark utility jackets moved quickly through the pipes.

Leading them was Frank Moretti Jr., holding a heavy industrial cutting torch.

""Hurry up with those valves,"" Frank hissed through his mask, kicking open the main natural gas distribution manifold.

""If this place goes up in an accidental gas explosion tonight, the primary insurance policy pays forty million dollars directly to the holding company.""

""Valente won't have a hotel to give to his filthy dishwashers.""

One of the enforcers poured five gallons of chemical accelerant over the central server racks and electrical distribution trunks.

Another man was disabling the primary water pressure valves for the building's internal sprinkler system.

They had entered through the old river drainage tunnels that Antonio Valente had used decades ago to smuggle contraband.

Frank ignited the cutting torch, the blue flame hissing with intense heat against the industrial copper fittings.

Up on the twelfth floor, Sophia’s phone rang on speaker mode.

It was Luca calling from the union hall.

""Sophia! The union agreed to the terms,"" Luca’s voice came through, filled with urgent energy.

""We’re signing the charter right now!""

""Luca, get out of there!"" Sophia screamed into the phone.

""The power is completely cut!""

""We smell gasoline in the air ducts!""

""Frank Moretti is inside the building!""

The phone line suddenly dissolved into loud static as the cellular repeater on the roof was disconnected.

Inside St. Jude’s Hall, Luca stared at the dead phone in his hand, his blood turning to ice.

Daniel Cho and Leo Bennett looked at his pale face.

""What happened?"" Daniel asked.

""Moretti is torching the hotel,"" Luca said, his voice dropping into deadly focus.

""Sophia and Maya are trapped on the twelfth floor.""

""He cut the power and shut down the sprinklers.""

The three hundred workers in the hall gasped in terror.

Twenty years of their lives, their newly won equity, and the lives of two women were about to be turned to ashes.

Luca didn't make a speech.

He grabbed his heavy coat from the chair and sprinted toward the double doors.

""Where are you going?"" Leo shouted after him.

""That building belongs to you now!"" Luca yelled over his shoulder, pushing into the freezing rain.

""I won't let them burn down what is yours!""

Daniel Cho turned to the hall, his eyes blazing with an authority nobody had ever seen in him before.

""Maintenance team! Engineers! Banquet prep!"" Daniel bellowed across the room.

""Grab every heavy wrench, fire extinguisher, and master key we have!""

""Nobody burns our house down!""

Within sixty seconds, fifty workers poured out of St. Jude’s Hall into their cars, tires screaming against the wet asphalt as they pursued Luca into the dark.
