Chapter 12 - The Hospital Reckoning

The high-security wing of Rhode Island Hospital in Providence was situated on the eighth floor behind reinforced magnetic security doors.

Two armed state troopers stood guard outside Room 812, their thumbs hooked over their tactical gun belts.

The smell of bleach, antiseptic wash, and medicinal oxygen hung heavy in the narrow hallway.

Emily and Lucas stepped out of the private elevator, accompanied by the hospital’s chief administrator and an Assistant District Attorney.

"The patient underwent surgery to remove the bullet fragments from his left shoulder late last night," the administrator explained in hushed tones.

"He is conscious, fully alert, and under twenty-four-hour police guard."

"The state magistrate performed an bedside arraignment this morning."

"He was denied bail on three counts of attempted murder and one count of conspiracy to commit kidnapping."

Lucas nodded curtly.

"Give us ten minutes alone with him."

The state troopers stepped aside, unlocking the electronic latch with their security keycards.

The door swung open with a soft, sterile whisper.

Inside the private room, Victor DeLuca lay propped up on an adjustable hospital bed, surrounded by beeping vital monitors and intravenous drip lines.

His left arm was immobilized in a heavy medical sling, and his silver hair was plastered against his pale forehead with clammy sweat.

His face was haggard, hollowed out by pain, fear, and the sudden realization that his lavish life of untouchable wealth had evaporated overnight.

A heavy steel shackle bound his right ankle securely to the chrome bed frame.

When he saw Emily walk through the door, his heart monitor instantly accelerated, the rhythmic beeping escalating into an anxious, frantic cadence.

"Get out," Victor rasped, his voice weak and dry.

"I don't have to speak to anyone without my legal counsel present."

"Your legal counsel is currently locked in a federal holding cell being processed for capital murder, Uncle Victor," Lucas said, pulling a chair to the foot of the bed and sitting down with deliberate slowness.

Victor's eyes darted between Lucas and Emily, panic flickering across his lined face.

"Capital murder?" Victor stammered, his dry lips sticking together.

"What are you talking about? Vance was supposed to file the probate motion—"

"Vance confessed, Victor," Emily interrupted, stepping up to the side of the bed.

She looked down at the man who had spent twenty-one years celebrating her supposed death.

She saw no terrifying mob boss.

She saw no brilliant dynastic mastermind.

She saw only an aging, pathetic coward who had spent his life living off the scraps of his father’s brutality.

"Marcus admitted that he orchestrated the murder of my father, David Vance," Emily said, her tone level and devoid of anger.

"And he admitted that he laced my mother's tea with digitalis while you stood outside her bedroom door like an errand boy."

Victor’s eyes widened in genuine, paralyzing shock.

"He... he told you about the tea?"

"He told the federal prosecutors everything, Victor," Lucas confirmed coldly.

"Every offshore bank account, every bribe paid to Judge Mercer, and every order you signed to hire the hit squad that breached the estate last night."

"You are facing consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole."

Victor turned his face toward the window, looking out over the gray, rain-slicked rooftops of Providence.

Tears of self-pity began to slide down his wrinkled cheeks.

"My father made me do it," Victor whispered, his voice trembling with pathetic excuses.

"Antonio was a tyrant, Lucas! You don't know what it was like growing up in that house before you were born!"

"If Antonio told you to jump, you jumped, or he broke your legs!"

"Julianna was his favorite! She always had his ear, she was the brilliant one, the pure one!"

"And then she brought that damn carpenter into our lives!"

Victor turned back to Emily, his eyes flashing with desperate, dying defiance.

"Antonio said our family would become a laughingstock if Julianna handed our terminals over to a grand jury!"

"He told me that if I didn't help him handle the problem, he would cut me out of the dynastic trust entirely and leave me with nothing!"

"So you tried to have a four-year-old child thrown into the ocean to save your allowance," Emily said, her voice cutting through his excuses like a scalpel.

Victor flinched, his throat working as he tried to swallow.

"I didn't want you dead, Isabella," Victor wept, reaching out with his trembling right hand as if begging for mercy.

"I swear to God, I told the men to drop you off at a church in Connecticut!"

"It was Antonio who told them to use the boat! Antonio said a living child was a living lawsuit!"

"Do not dare use my grandfather to wash your hands, Victor," Lucas snarled, leaning forward until his shadow covered the bed.

"You were fifty years old when Elena died."

"You had twenty years to tell the truth."

"Instead, you spent the last six months visiting offshore loan sharks, gambling away millions in anticipation of Isabella being declared dead on October 14th."

"You walked into the estate yesterday ready to slaughter an innocent maid because she looked like the girl you stole from this world."

Victor sank back into his pillows, his breath rattling in his chest as the heart monitor continued its rapid, chaotic rhythm.

"What do you want from me?" Victor sobbed, covering his eyes with his uninjured hand.

"You've taken everything. The company, the money, the trust... I have nothing left."

Emily reached out, took the corner of the hospital tray table, and pulled it closer to the bed.

On the tray, she placed an official legal document stamped by the Rhode Island Department of Corrections and the DeLuca Dynastic Trustee Council.

"This is an irrevocable renunciation of all claims to the DeLuca name, the ancestral properties, and the family burial grounds," Emily said.

"You will sign it."

Victor opened his eyes, staring at the paper through his tears.

"The family plot...?" Victor gasped.

"You won't even let me be buried beside my father?"

"You don't belong beside Antonio, and you certainly don't belong anywhere near Julianna or Elena," Emily answered, her voice ringing with absolute moral finality.

"You will die in a state penitentiary, Victor."

"And when your time comes, your ashes will be scattered in an unmarked public plot with the rest of the forgotten criminals who took lives for money."

"Sign the paper."

Victor looked at Emily's face, seeing Julianna’s proud, unyielding spirit burning behind her eyes.

He knew there was no bargaining.

There was no charm, no threat, and no bribe that could ever sway the woman standing before him.

With shaking, trembling fingers, Victor took the pen Lucas held out to him.

He scribbled his name across the signature line, the ink jagged and unsteady.

Lucas took the document, inspected the signature, and slipped it into his leather portfolio.

"The United States Marshals will transfer you to the federal detention facility in Boston as soon as the surgical drains are removed tomorrow morning," Lucas said, rising from his chair.

Emily looked at Victor one last time.

The cold dread that had gripped her heart since the moment Noah whispered the name Isabella in the library finally melted away.

She didn't hate Victor DeLuca anymore.

He was too small, too broken, and too pathetic to carry the weight of her hatred.

He was simply a relic of a dark, poisonous past that was finally being buried forever.

"Goodbye, Victor," Emily said softly.

She turned toward the door, her coat swaying with her confident, measured steps.

May you like

As the heavy magnetic door closed behind them, cutting off the sound of the beeping monitors and Victor's muffled weeping, Emily let out a long, cleansing breath.

The ghosts of Rhode Island Hospital were finally laid to rest.
