Chapter 9 - The Fire on the Horizon

The rotunda erupted into chaos before Marcus Vance could even turn his head.

Dominic fired a non-lethal breaching slug into the center of the security console, showering the reception desk in sparks and shattered plastic.

The four private security guards spun around, reaching for their holsters, but Dominic moved with the relentless speed of an elite military operator.

He closed the distance in two strides, using the heavy stock of his tactical shotgun to strike the first guard across the jaw, sending him crashing onto the marble floor.

He pivoted, sweeping the legs out from under the second guard, while drawing a taser with his left hand and firing it directly into the chest of the third.

The third guard convulsed and collapsed, his limbs twitching as fifty thousand volts neutralized his nervous system.

The fourth guard dropped his weapon, raised both hands in the air, and backed against the wall with his eyes wide in terror.

Marcus Vance stumbled backward toward the private elevator, his expensive spectacles knocked askew, his face contorted in sheer panic.

"Stay where you are, counselor," Dominic growled, leveling the barrel of his shotgun straight at Vance's chest.

Inside the vault, Lucas reached up, pulled the emergency mechanical release lever hidden behind the door frame, and manually wrenched the steel door open.

Emily rushed out of the vault, clutching the leather dispatch case and the sapphire necklace to her chest.

Lucas stepped into the rotunda, his weapon lowered but ready, his cold eyes fixed on Marcus Vance.

"You underestimated my grandmother, Vance," Lucas said, his voice echoing in the marble hall.

"She knew you would try to intercept us at the bank."

"She had Dominic tracking your encrypted cell phone signals since midnight."

Vance leaned against the wood paneling of the elevator foyer, his breathing ragged, his smug arrogance replaced by cornered desperation.

"You think this saves you, Lucas?" Vance hissed, spitting blood from a split lip onto his silk tie.

"Judge Mercer is signing the probate decree in exactly two hours!"

"Even with these papers, you cannot get an emergency hearing before nine o'clock!"

"The courthouse doors are locked until eight-thirty, and Mercer has barred all outside motions from the docket!"

"The trust transfers automatically at nine-zero-one!"

"By the time you file an appeal, the funds will be wired into thirteen numbered shell accounts in Zurich and the Cayman Islands!"

"You will have a dead cousin’s name, and I will have four billion dollars!"

Emily stepped forward, stopping less than three feet from the man who had helped orchestrate her mother’s murder.

She opened the dispatch case, pulled out Dr. Campbell’s original confession, and held it right before his eyes.

"You won't have four billion dollars, Mr. Vance," Emily said, her voice clear, ice-cold, and entirely devoid of fear.

"Because we aren't going to Judge Mercer’s private courtroom."

"We are going to the DeLuca Tower."

Vance blinked, genuine confusion breaking through his panic.

"What?"

"The board of directors is meeting at seven-thirty this morning for an extraordinary shareholder vote to approve the trust liquidation," Emily said, glancing at the corporate schedule printed in Elena’s ledger.

"You called that meeting yourself three days ago, assuming Victor would walk in with the probate order."

"Instead, I am walking into that boardroom."

"With my mother's necklace, my grandmother's proof, and your physician’s confession."

Vance stared at her, his eyes darting frantically as the full scope of Elena’s posthumous counter-attack finally clicked in his mind.

"You have no standing without a certified court decree!" Vance snarled.

"The corporate bylaws say otherwise," Lucas countered with a cold smile.

"Under Section Four of the founding charter, if a direct heir presents certified biological verification along with the original founder's signet, all corporate powers are immediately suspended pending a full shareholder audit."

"You wrote those bylaws yourself twenty years ago to protect your corporate syndicate from outside corporate raiders."

"Now, they are going to strangle you."

Lucas gestured to Dominic.

"Zip-tie him to the handrail in the security office."

"Confiscate his phones, his laptop, and his keycards."

"If he makes a single sound, knock him out cold."

Dominic grabbed Vance by the collar and shoved him into the back office without ceremony, slamming the heavy wooden door shut.

Emily, Lucas, and Dominic hurried toward the executive elevator, carrying the fireproof case containing the evidence that would rewrite the destiny of the DeLuca dynasty.

They reached the street level at five-forty-five in the morning.

The city of Providence was slowly waking up, delivery trucks rumbling through the streets, neon diner signs buzzing through the damp dawn mist.

They switched to a clean corporate sedan Dominic had staged two blocks away and headed straight toward Newport.

The forty-five-minute drive was spent in tense, focused silence.

Lucas spent the journey making rapid, coded phone calls to loyal division managers, alerting the heads of international logistics, public relations, and private security to convene in the executive boardroom at DeLuca Tower.

Emily sat in the back, carefully fastening the teardrop sapphire necklace around her neck.

The platinum chain felt cool against her collarbone, the heavy gemstone resting perfectly against the hollow of her throat.

She smoothed down her black trousers and slipped into a sharp, tailored black blazer Lucas had retrieved from the safehouse cache.

She looked at her reflection in the car window.

The reflection was no longer Emily Carter, the exhausted waitress and frightened domestic maid.

Staring back from the glass was Isabella DeLuca—poised, dangerous, and carrying the unyielding spirit of two generations of women who refused to be erased.

At six-forty in the morning, the black sedan pulled up before the towering glass monolith of DeLuca Maritime Tower, situated at the edge of Newport Harbor.

Dozens of television news vans were already parked along the curb, satellite dishes extended toward the sky.

Victor DeLuca’s midnight arrest at the coastal estate had leaked to the press, and rumors of a massive dynastic feud were spreading across international business networks.

Reporters with microphones and heavy cameras crowded behind police barricades at the main entrance.

"They smell blood in the water," Lucas remarked, looking out at the flashing camera lights.

"Good," Emily replied, her voice firm.

"Let them watch the wolves get fed."

They entered through the private basement garage, bypassing the media gauntlet, and stepped into the private executive elevator that serviced only the top floor.

The elevator climbed forty floors in silence, the pressure popping in Emily’s ears as the city and the ocean spread out beneath them through the glass shaft.

When the elevator chimed on the fortieth floor, the double doors slid open to reveal the grand boardroom.

Seated around the massive forty-foot mahogany table were eighteen men and women—the senior executives, board members, and legal trustees of DeLuca Enterprises.

At the head of the table sat Marcus Vance’s deputy counsel, holding an open laptop displaying the live probate court countdown timer.

The timer on the wall screen read: 00:48:12.

Forty-eight minutes until Judge Mercer’s scheduled decree.

The room erupted into shocked murmurs as Lucas stepped through the double doors, flanked by Dominic.

"Lucas!" the senior director, a white-haired executive named Arthur Finch, stood up, leaning against the table.

"What is the meaning of this? Victor is under arrest, the media is outside, and we are forty minutes away from an automatic court liquidation!"

"Where is Marcus Vance?"

Lucas stepped aside, allowing Emily to walk into the center of the room.

The entire boardroom fell instantly, completely silent.

The executives stared at Emily’s face—the high cheekbones, the almond-shaped brown eyes, the tiny pale indentation above her left eyebrow, and the dazzling teardrop sapphire resting against her chest.

Arthur Finch’s mouth fell open, his papers slipping from his trembling fingers and scattering across the table.

"Julianna...?" Finch breathed, his face turning pale as paper.

"No, Arthur," Lucas announced, his voice ringing through the room with absolute authority.

"This is not Julianna."
