Chapter 10 - The Commander of the Storm

The morning sun rose over the Potomac River, casting a brilliant, golden glow over the manicured grounds of Fort McNair in Washington, D.C.

I stood on the balcony of my new home, a beautiful, historic brick house overlooking the water. The air was crisp, clean, and filled with the distant, reassuring sounds of military bugles playing reveille.

In the living room behind me, Ethan was laughing as he played with a wooden toy, while Grace was sitting quietly, watching the sunlight dance across the floor. They were thriving. They were safe, loved, and protected by a ring of steel.

I wore my Class A dress uniform. The silver eagles of a Colonel rested proudly on my shoulders, and the weight of my medals clinked softly against my chest.

Major General Vance walked up the steps of my porch, holding a folder of course curriculum for the upcoming semester at the War College.

"Ready for your first lecture, Colonel?" he asked, offering a warm, respectful smile.

"Ready, General," I replied, stepping down to meet him.

I looked back at my children one last time before heading to the waiting vehicle.

Daniel had thought he was taking a piece of my world away when he handed me those divorce papers. He had thought he was leaving me with nothing. But he never understood that he was never my world. He was just a temporary assignment—one that I had officially completed and closed.

My true rank wasn't just about the silver eagles on my uniform or the soldiers under my command. It was about the strength to endure the darkest nights, the wisdom to protect the innocent, and the power to walk away from wolves in sheep's clothing.

My children would grow up knowing their mother wasn’t just someone who survived the storm.

She was the commander of it.
