Chapter 3 - The Paperwork of Betrayal

The afternoon sun was filtering through the thin hospital blinds when the door to Claire’s recovery room swung open.
It wasn't a gentle entrance. Daniel pushed his way in, smelling of expensive sandalwood cologne, expensive cigars, and a heavy lunch. He didn't look at the twin bassinets resting near the window. He didn't look at Claire’s exhausted, pale face.
Instead, he tossed a thick, manila envelope onto her hospital bed. It landed with a heavy, dry thud right next to her hand.
"Sign them," Daniel said. His tone was dismissive, devoid of any warmth or humanity.
Claire looked down at the envelope. "What is this, Daniel?"
"Divorce papers," he said, folding his arms. "I’ve had my lawyer draft them up. You get nothing. No alimony, no assets. You’re useless, Claire. You’ve always been a drag on my life. For five years, I’ve had to pretend to be proud of a woman who does filing in a dark room for minimum wage."
He took a step closer, a cruel, mocking smirk playing on his lips. "Look at Vanessa. She’s a real woman. She has connections, she has wealth. She saved my family's legacy while you sat on your hands. You’ve never done anything important in your entire miserable life."
Claire did not raise her voice. She did not cry. Her eyes, cold and steady as steel, locked onto his. "You want a divorce because of Vanessa?"
"I want a divorce because I deserve better than you," Daniel spat. "And as for the kids..." He glanced toward the bassinets for the first time, his eyes hardening. "I’m taking Ethan. My parents want a grandson to carry on the Hayes name. Vanessa will raise him. You can keep the girl. You can raise her to be a miserable, quiet failure just like you."
The room grew deathly cold.
If Daniel had any tactical awareness, he would have recognized the look in Claire’s eyes. It was the exact same look she had given a rogue warlord in a desert compound before her team breached the perimeter. It was the look of a hunter who had just watched their prey walk directly into a trap.
"No, you won't," Claire said softly.
Daniel laughed, a loud, obnoxious sound that made baby Grace stir in her sleep. "What are you going to do about it? You don't even have a home anymore, Claire. I’m terminating our lease at the cottage next week. You have no money, no career, and no family to back you up. You’re a nobody."
Claire slowly reached out, pulled the document from the envelope, and picked up a pen from the bedside table. Without a single word of protest, she flipped to the signature page and signed her name in bold, fluid strokes: Claire Bennett.
She handed the papers back to him.
"You should leave now, Daniel," she said, her voice eerily calm. "You have a celebration to prepare for, don't you?"
Daniel snatched the papers, a triumphant grin spreading across his face. "Smart move. At least you know when you’re beaten. Don't bother coming back to the cottage. Your clothes will be in trash bags on the curb."
He turned on his heel and walked out, slamming the door behind him.
Once the door closed, Claire reached for her phone. She didn't call a divorce attorney. She didn't call a friend.
She dialed a secure, encrypted military line.

"This is Colonel Bennett," she said, her voice dropping into a register of supreme, unquestioned command. "Authentication code: Whiskey-Echo-Niner-Four. I need a full tactical transport, a military police escort, and state law enforcement coordination. I have a domestic threat level bravo in Connecticut. Execute immediately."
On the other end of the line, a voice replied instantly: "Understood, Colonel. Assets are being deployed. We are at your command."
