Chapter 12 - The Sunrise Over the Harbor and the New Beginning

The first rays of dawn broke over the Atlantic Ocean, washing the New York skyline in brilliant shades of gold, rose, and amber.
The storm clouds of the past week were completely gone, leaving behind a crisp, beautiful morning filled with endless promise.
Inside the Mercer Citadel penthouse, the house was peaceful.
Daniel was resting comfortably in the west wing, his strength returning day by day under the care of top-tier physicians and the loving presence of his restored family.
Mommy and I stood by the massive floor-to-ceiling glass windows, looking out over the sparkling waters of the harbor.
Behind us came the familiar, quiet sound of heavy footsteps.
Andrew walked into the room, holding two steaming cups of coffee in one hand and a small glass of warm milk for me in the other.
He had changed into a comfortable dark sweater and slacks, looking more like a regular man than the terrifying Mafia Boss of Brooklyn.
He handed a cup to Mommy, smiling warmly as their fingers brushed against the ceramic.
“Morning, Dr. Callahan,” Andrew greeted softly, leaning down to press a tender kiss to her temple.
“Morning, Mr. Mercer,” Mommy replied, leaning her head against his shoulder with a radiant smile.
I ran over, tugging on the hem of his sweater.
“Where’s my milk, Andrew?” I demanded playfully.
Andrew chuckled, kneeling down and handing me my glass with exaggerated solemnity.
“Right here, Agent Ivy,” he said with a straight face. “Fuel for the chief inspector.”
I giggled, taking a sip of the warm milk while staring up at the two of them.
Mommy slipped her hand into Andrew’s, the vintage diamond ring sparkling brilliantly in the morning sun right beside the tiny, crumpled five-dollar bill she had kept framed on the mantelpiece.
It was a reminder of where we had started—two frightened souls hiding in the dark, clutching a single bill and a desperate prayer.
And now, we stood atop an iron fortress, surrounded by love, family, and an unbreakable bond that no enemy could ever shatter.
Andrew looked down at me, then up at Mommy, his ice-blue eyes shining with a deep, enduring peace.

“The contract is fulfilled,” Andrew whispered, wrapping his strong arms around both of us as the sun crested the horizon.
“And our forever has just begun.”
