Chapter 4 - The Crimson Penthouse and the Uninvited Groom

The penthouse suite on the sixth floor of Ashwood Nursing Home was bathed in the warm, mocking glow of fairy lights and white wedding decorations.
An altar had been hastily set up near the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the glittering expanse of the Brooklyn skyline.
Standing by the altar was a tall, silver-haired man in an expensive charcoal tuxedo, adjusting his cuffs with an air of arrogant boredom.
That was Ronald Sterling.
And sitting in a velvet armchair nearby, bound by thick nylon ties and with her mouth taped shut, was my mommy.
Her dark hair was messy, her nurse’s uniform stained with dirt and dried tears, but her eyes were wide and defiant as she glared at the man who had stolen her freedom.
The elevator doors at the end of the hall didn't just open—they exploded inward with a deafening metal crash.
Ronald Sterling turned around, his smug smile vanishing instantly as Andrew Mercer stepped out of the wreckage.
Andrew’s white shirt was stained with soot and blood not his own.
His knuckles were raw, and his eyes burned with the cold, absolute promise of extinction.
Behind him stood Julian, holding a suppressed automatic weapon leveled squarely at the four armed bodyguards stationed around the room.
“Andrew Mercer,” Sterling said, trying to force a calm, sophisticated laugh that sounded like glass breaking.
“I must admit, I didn't think even the great Ghost of Brooklyn would be foolish enough to walk straight into a lions' den over a common nurse.”
Andrew didn't say a word.
He walked forward with slow, deliberate strides, each step echoing like a falling guillotine against the polished marble floor.
“Let her go, Ronald,” Andrew said, his voice dropping an octave into a register that made the bodyguards instinctively take a half-step backward.
Sterling scoffed, stepping closer to my mommy and resting a heavy hand on her shoulder.
Mommy let out a muffled scream behind the tape, thrashing violently against the chair.
“Now, why would I do that?” Sterling sneered, pulling a small silver switchblade from his pocket and pressing the cold blade gently against Mommy’s cheek.
“She knows about the old man downstairs. She knows too much about my operations here. Furthermore, she makes a lovely bride for my retirement party. If you take one more step, Mercer, I’ll slice her face from ear to ear before your men can even twitch.”
The bodyguards raised their weapons, their fingers tightening on the triggers.
Andrew stopped.
For a fraction of a second, the air in the penthouse seemed to freeze entirely.
Sterling smiled wider, thinking he had won the standoff.
“That’s it, Mercer. Drop the weapons, get on your knees, and—”
BANG.
The sound wasn't coming from Julian’s gun.
It came from the double doors behind Sterling.
A single 9mm bullet punched straight through the center of the lead bodyguard’s forehead.
The man dropped like a sack of wet cement.
Before the others could turn, Marcus stepped into the room from the stairwell fire escape, holding a smoking pistol in each hand, flanked by six more black-suited enforcers who flooded the suite from every angle.
Sterling’s face turned the color of curdled milk.
“What… what is this?!” Sterling shrieked, pressing the knife harder against Mommy’s skin.
“I said drop your weapons!”
Andrew didn't drop anything.
He moved faster than humanly possible.
In the blink of an eye, Andrew lunged across the ten-foot gap between them.
He grabbed Sterling’s wrist with such crushing force that a sickening pop echoed through the room.
The switchblade clattered uselessly to the marble floor.
Sterling let out a high-pitched shriek of agony as Andrew twisted his arm behind his back and slammed him face-first into the altar flowers.
“You touch my bride-to-be’s savior with a dirty knife,” Andrew whispered into Sterling’s ear, his voice dripping with pure venom, “and I will feed you to the rats in the East River piece by piece.”
Julian rushed forward with a pair of heavy wire cutters, instantly slicing through the nylon ties binding Mommy’s wrists and ripping the tape from her mouth.
Mommy gasped for air, coughing and crying as she fell forward.
Instead of hitting the floor, she was caught in a pair of strong, familiar arms.
I had just sprinted out of the service elevator behind Marcus, running as fast as my little legs could carry me into the penthouse.
“Mommy!” I screamed, throwing myself against her knees.
Mommy wrapped her arms around me so tight I thought my ribs would crack, burying her face in my hair and sobbing uncontrollably.
“Ivy! Oh, my sweet baby girl… you’re safe… you’re alive…”
Across the room, Andrew stood over the groaning, broken form of Ronald Sterling, pressing his heavy leather boot squarely onto the back of Sterling’s neck.
Andrew looked over at us, his fierce expression instantly melting into something impossibly gentle as he met Mommy’s tear-filled eyes.

“You’re safe now, Doctor Callahan,” Andrew said softly, his voice full of a reverence I had never heard before.
“The contract has been fulfilled.”
