Chapter 11 - The Midnight Evacuation and the Armor Around a Target

The heavy oak doors of Lorenzo’s study banged against the wainscoting as he strode into the hallway, his face carved from the same unforgiving marble that lined the foyer.

Viktor hurried to keep pace, his boots clicking sharply against the polished floorboards.

"Boss, the Strike Force isn't at the main gate anymore," Viktor warned, holding a secure radio close to his ear as decrypted scanner chatter crackled through the speaker. "They’ve pulled back three miles down Lake Cook Road, establishing a surveillance perimeter. If we move the cars now, their mobile units will log the plates within sixty seconds."

Lorenzo stopped dead in his tracks.

His dark eyes flashed with cold, calculating fury.

"They want to force an extraction," Lorenzo realized aloud, his voice dropping into a low, dangerous rumble. "They aren't here to arrest her tonight. They are here to see who I send to protect her. They want to map my vulnerabilities."

"If we leave them in the staff quarters, federal marshals with a judge-signed search warrant will be knocking on our service entrance by morning," Viktor pointed out, the grim reality of the situation hanging heavily in the air. "Once they subpoena Clara, they’ll squeeze her. They’ll threaten her with child protective services, loss of custody, tax fraud—everything in the federal playbook—until she tells them every detail about your personal life, your estate layout, and your daily routine."

The word leverage echoed inside Lorenzo’s mind with the force of a gunshot.

His father’s voice rang out from the past: Love creates leverage. Family creates graves.

For eleven years, Lorenzo had lived by that commandment. He had kept his world sterile, isolated, and utterly untouchable.

And now, because a three-year-old girl with mismatched pink socks had looked up at him and asked for a five-minute hug, his entire empire had a flashing red target painted on its back.

"They will not touch her," Lorenzo said, his voice absolute, terrifying, and completely unyielding.

"Boss, what do you—"

"We are not moving them off the estate," Lorenzo interrupted, turning toward the grand staircase. "We are moving them deeper."

Viktor’s eyebrows shot up. "The panic vault beneath the west wing?"

"No," Lorenzo said, walking toward the stairs with long, purposeful strides. "The panic vault is a tomb. If the feds raid with a national security warrant, they’ll tear this house down to the foundation. I want them in the master apartments."

Viktor blinked once. Twice.

The master apartments occupied the entire upper floor of the north wing—a private, high-security fortress-within-a-fortress that no one outside of Lorenzo and his two most trusted men had entered in over a decade.

"Boss... are you sure?" Viktor asked carefully. "Putting civilians—putting them—in your personal quarters..."

"They are not civilians, Viktor," Lorenzo interrupted, pausing on the bottom step and turning back to look his most loyal enforcer dead in the eye. "They are my responsibility. Now move."
