Chapter 14 - The Dawn Raid That Failed and the FBI’s Ultimate Frustration

At 5:45 AM on Wednesday morning, the quiet peace of the Lake Forest estate was shattered.
Twelve black-and-white squad cars, three unmarked federal vans, and two dozen heavily armed FBI agents swarmed through the iron gates, converging on the main entrance of the Duca mansion with riot shields and battering rams.
Special Agent in Charge Marcus Vance—a ruthless career prosecutor known for taking down half the syndicates on the East Coast—led the assault.
He slammed his fist against the grand double doors.
"Federal Bureau of Investigation! Open up!"
Thirty seconds later, the heavy oak doors swung inward.
Standing in the center of the grand foyer, impeccably dressed in a charcoal-gray suit with a silver silk tie, stood Lorenzo Duca.
He was holding a ceramic mug of black coffee, sipping it slowly, looking as relaxed as a man greeting morning guests for brunch.
Agent Vance marched up to him, flashing a federal badge under Lorenzo’s nose.
"Lorenzo Duca, you are harboring a federal witness and obstructing an ongoing racketeering investigation into the misappropriation of syndicate funds!" Vance barked triumphantly. "Where is Clara Bennett?"
Lorenzo took another unhurried sip of his coffee.
"Good morning, Agent Vance," Lorenzo said smoothly, his voice echoing off the marble floor. "You're up early. Did you skip breakfast, or are you just naturally this unpleasant?"
"Don't play games with me, Duca!" Vance snapped, signaling two tactical agents to fan out toward the service stairs. "We have a search warrant signed by Judge Henderson covering every square inch of this property. Where is the woman?"
"You are welcome to look, Agent," Lorenzo said, stepping aside with a mocking sweep of his hand. "Though I should warn you—my estate is very large. You might find yourself walking in circles for quite a long time."
Vance sneered. "Search the entire grounds! Basement to attic! Tear up the floorboards if you have to!"
For the next four hours, federal agents tore through the Duca estate.
They ripped open closets, overturned furniture, searched the kitchens, checked the staff quarters, and tore into the basement storage rooms.
They found ledgers, they found wine cellars, they found hidden passageways.
They found absolutely nothing.
At 10:15 AM, Agent Vance marched back into the grand foyer, sweating through his shirt, his face flushed with humiliating rage.
He stopped inches away from Lorenzo, who was still standing in the exact same spot, casually finishing his second cup of coffee.
"She’s not on the property," Vance snarled, his voice trembling with frustration. "Where did you hide her, Duca?"
Lorenzo set his empty mug down on a small marble side table with a soft clink.
"Agent Vance," Lorenzo said, leaning down slightly to look the federal prosecutor dead in the eye. "If you ever accuse me of hiding someone on my property again, I suggest you bring a better search warrant. And perhaps... a better attitude."
Vance gritted his teeth, realizing he had been completely outplayed. Without the witness, without the evidence of collusion, his case had turned to dust.
"This isn't over, Duca," Vance spat out, turning on his heel. "Pack up! We're leaving!"
As the federal convoy scrambled out the iron gates in defeat, Viktor stepped out from the shadows near the grand staircase.

"They're gone, Boss," Viktor reported quietly.
Lorenzo didn't smile. He turned and walked toward the private elevator leading to the north wing.
