Chapter 10 - The Fallout on the Ground

Back down on solid ground, miles away from the quiet serenity of the stratosphere, the heavy rain at Teterboro Airport continued to beat down relentlessly. For Captain Ryan Sterling and former lead flight attendant Terra Blair, the reality of their catastrophic mistake was crashing down with the force of a tidal wave.
They were standing under the leaking overhang of a public bus shelter near the perimeter gate, completely drenched, shivering in the cold October wind. The luxury of private aviation, private terminals, and chauffeur-driven black cars had vanished in an instant, replaced by the grim, mundane reality of public transit and unemployment.
Terra was sobbing quietly, her mascara running down her cheeks in dark, muddy streaks, completely destroying the surgical precision of her makeup.
"I can't believe this," Terra whimpered, hugging her arms tightly across her soaked uniform jacket. "My apartment lease is due next week, my car payment is coming up, and now my entire aviation record is flagged for gross misconduct! How am I supposed to find another job?"
Ryan didn't answer. He stood staring blankly at the wet pavement, his silver hair plastered to his skull, looking ten years older than he had an hour ago. The gold-striped epaulettes that he had so proudly worn for decades were gone—one lost in a puddle on the tarmac, the other still clutched tightly in his coat pocket like a pathetic talisman of a life he had utterly destroyed through sheer hubris.
His phone buzzed in his pocket. Ryan pulled it out with trembling fingers, hoping against hope that Marcus Vance had reconsidered, or that it was some kind of administrative error.
Instead, it was an automated email from Obsidian Aviation Management.
Subject: Notice of Immediate Employment Termination and License Flagging.
Ryan clicked open the message. The text was brutally concise, leaving no room for negotiation, appeal, or ambiguity. It cited direct violation of corporate ethics, gross insubordination, harassment of a primary asset stakeholder, and immediate revocation of flight authorization privileges across all affiliated charter networks. Furthermore, the FAA licensing board had already received an expedited report regarding professional misconduct, triggering a mandatory review that would effectively bar him from commercial or private cockpits permanently.
Ryan let out a hollow, defeated laugh that was instantly swallowed by the roar of a passing delivery truck on the highway.
"It's over, Terra," Ryan whispered, his voice cracking with utter despair. "We're done."
"What do you mean we're done?" Terra snapped, her grief turning into sudden, venomous anger. "This is your fault! You're the one who started shouting at her, you're the one who refused to look at her ID, and you're the one who thought you were untouchable!"
May you like
"Shut up!" Ryan yelled back, his voice suddenly sharp with a flash of his old, ugly temper. "You were right there laughing with me! You called her a maintenance worker first!"
They stood glaring at each other in the miserable rain, their temporary alliance of arrogance completely shattered by the very consequences they had brought upon themselves.
