Chapter 5 - The Descent from Power

For several seconds, the only sound on the tarmac was the relentless beating of the rain against the metal fuselage of the Bombardier Global 7500. Captain Ryan Sterling stood frozen, the phone still clutched in his trembling right hand as if it were a venomous snake. The arrogant posture that had defined him moments earlier had completely collapsed, leaving behind a desperate, aging man whose entire world had just tilted on its axis.

Terra Blair, who had been leaning against the air stair railing with a smirk, noticed the sudden shift in the captain's demeanor. Her smile faded into a confused frown as she looked between Ryan's pale face and Allara's composed stance.

"Captain?" Terra asked nervously, her voice dropping the artificial sweetness. "Ryan, what's going on? Who was on the phone?"

Ryan couldn't answer. His lips moved slightly, but no words came out. His mind was racing backward through every condescending remark, every smirk, and every insult he had hurled at the young woman standing in the mud. He realized with terrifying clarity that the signature on his monthly paycheck matched the ID card tucked securely inside the battered leather backpack Allara was holding.

Allara stepped forward, her movements deliberate and unhurried. She reached out and plucked her phone right out of Ryan's paralyzed grip. The screen flickered, casting a cool blue light over her rain-soaked face.

"You called me a hitchhiker, Captain," Allara said quietly, her voice cutting through the damp air with absolute precision. "You said people who step foot on these stairs have names that make Wall Street tremble. My name does make Wall Street tremble. Unfortunately for you, it's also the name on your termination paperwork."

Ryan’s knees actually buckled slightly. He took a half-step backward, catching himself on the edge of the metal stair.

"Dr... Dr. Banks," Ryan stammered, his silver-coiffed hair now plastered to his forehead by the rain, completely destroying his aerodynamic perfection. "Please. It was a misunderstanding. With the weather, the stress of the departure window... I couldn't possibly have known—"

"You didn't know because you judge people by their clothing rather than their credentials," Allara interrupted, her gaze piercing. "You assumed that because I was wearing a hoodie and had mud on my sneakers, I was beneath you. You forgot that true power doesn't need to dress up to prove itself."

Terra stepped down to block Allara's path once more, her face contorted with panic and indignation.

"Look, you can't fire him!" Terra snapped, her voice rising sharply. "We have a contract! We are union-backed flight crew representing premier aviation standards! You can't just—"

"I can do whatever I want with my own crew, Miss Blair," Allara said, turning her sharp gaze onto the lead flight attendant. "And as of ten seconds ago, your standards have failed my most basic requirement: treating people with fundamental human decency."
