Chapter 12 - The Ride to Laramie

Time was of the essence, as the corrupt local magistrate in Blackstone Creek intended to serve the fraudulent injunction at dawn the following morning, backed by a dozen hired guns brought in from out of town to intimidate the Harrison hands. Without a moment to lose, Cole and Emma prepared for a grueling, nonstop midnight ride across sixty miles of rugged mountain trails to reach the federal circuit court in Laramie before the courthouse opened its doors at eight o'clock. Martha packed thick wool blankets, dried venison, and heavy canteens of hot black coffee into their saddlebags while the ranch hands hastily saddled their strongest, most sure-footed mountain horses for the punishing nocturnal journey through freezing alpine passes.

The wind howled fiercely through the dark pine trees as Cole and Emma pushed their mounts hard up the winding mountain trail, the freezing October air turning their breath into thick clouds of white mist under a starless, moonless sky. Emma rode with a fierce, unwavering determination, her posture straight and balanced in the saddle, proving once again that she was infinitely more resilient than any of the pampered socialites of Blackstone Creek who would have fainted at the mere thought of a night ride through the freezing wilderness. Cole stayed close by her side the entire way, his watchful eyes constantly scanning the dark tree line for any sign of pursuit or ambush, fiercely protective of the remarkable woman who had stolen his heart and become his true equal in every possible sense.

As the first pale streaks of gray dawn began to break over the eastern horizon, painting the jagged peaks of the Laramie mountain range in shades of pale amber and frost, the towering brick structure of the federal circuit courthouse finally came into view at the end of the dusty town street. They had made the sixty-mile journey in record time, pushing their horses to the absolute limit of endurance. Dismounting stiffly from their lathered, steaming mounts, Cole and Emma walked up the massive stone steps of the courthouse just as the heavy oak doors were being unlocked by the morning bailiff. Stepping into the warm, solemn interior of the hall of justice, Emma smoothed down the skirt of her dark blue wool dress, took a deep, grounding breath, and clutched her leather satchel containing the definitive proof of her stepmother's corruption against her chest like a shield.

They did not have to wait long; just as the federal judge was taking his seat behind the high mahogany bench, the heavy doors behind them swung open with a loud bang, and local sheriff Higgins marched into the courtroom alongside a frantic, red-faced man representing Margaret's legal interests, holding the fraudulent injunction high in the air. "Your Honor! We are here to serve an immediate federal stop-order on Harrison Ridge on behalf of the Carter estate!" the lawyer declared loudly, strutting down the center aisle with arrogant confidence. Before the judge could even look down at the papers, Emma stepped forward into the center of the courtroom, her voice ringing out clear, resonant, and entirely unafraid. "With all due respect, Your Honor," Emma stated, stepping right into the path of the bewildered lawyer and slamming her own leather satchel down onto the clerk's desk, "you might want to examine the actual financial ledgers and forged tax stamps before you sign away the rights of legitimate landowners to a criminal."
