Chapter 5 - The Ultimatum of Harrison Ridge

The heavy silence that fell over the Carter foyer was so absolute that the ticking of the grandfather clock sounded like the strike of a sledgehammer against stone. Margaret backed away slowly, clutching the mysterious letter to her heaving chest as if it were a shield against an oncoming storm, her eyes wide with sheer panic as Cole Harrison towered over her without even sparing her a glance. Vivian opened her mouth to speak, a haughty and offended retort forming on her painted lips, but the terrifying, frozen glare Cole cast in her direction instantly sealed her mouth shut and forced her to stumble backward into the arms of the hallway table. Thomas Carter slowly wheeled his rolling armchair out from the parlor doorway, his weathered hands gripping the wooden wheels tightly as he looked up at the richest rancher in Wyoming with a mixture of profound shock and desperate paternal hope.

Cole stopped just two feet away from Emma, his dark, piercing eyes softening remarkably as they swept over her tired face, taking in every single detail of her honest, unpretentious beauty with an undisguised devotion that sent a shiver down her spine. "I didn't write that letter for the mistress of this house, Miss Carter," Cole said, his deep, gravelly voice echoing off the high timber ceiling with absolute authority. He turned his head slowly to fix a blistering, contemptuous stare upon Margaret, whose knees were now visibly shaking beneath her heavy skirts. "I wrote it to the only person in this entire county who actually understands what it takes to build an empire out of dirt, sweat, and blood. And I delivered it personally because I refuse to let cowards and snobs keep playing games with someone who is ten times the woman any of them could ever hope to be."

Margaret’s face twisted into an ugly, defensive snarl as indignation temporarily overpowered her overwhelming terror, causing her to step forward and thrust the cream-colored letter defensively into the open air between them. "You must have lost your absolute mind, Mr. Harrison!" Margaret shrieked hysterically, her voice cracking with desperate fury as she pointed a trembling, manicured finger directly at Emma's chest. "She is a clumsy, unrefined peasant girl who belongs in the barn scrubbing manure off her boots, not sitting across a dinner table from a gentleman of your staggering wealth and social standing! If you marry her—if you even associate with her outside of these walls—you will be the laughingstock of every elite social club from Cheyenne to Laramie!"

Cole did not even bother to look at Margaret as she ranted; instead, he slowly extended his large, calloused hand toward Emma, palm upward, offering an open invitation that bridged the vast chasm between their two entirely different worlds. "Pack your winter shawl, Emma," Cole commanded quietly, his dark eyes locked onto hers with a fierce, unwavering intensity that promised safety, respect, and a future far beyond the miserable confines of the Carter ranch. "My wagons are waiting at the edge of your property line right now, and Harrison Ridge has a massive, empty house that is desperately waiting for someone with your heart to finally turn it into a real home." Emma stared down at his outstretched hand, tears finally spilling over her long lashes and tracking warm paths down her flushed, rosy cheeks as she realized that her life of quiet humiliation was officially, irrevocably over.
