THE FORGOTTEN BLOODLINE / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1 - The Outcast's Escape

The rain in the lower district of Oakhaven never truly washed anything clean; it merely turned the soot of the industrial factories into a thick, miserable mire that clung to everything. For Arthur Pendelton, the mud was currently the least of his worries. His chest heaved, each breath burning like liquid fire as he sprinted down the narrow, cobblestone alleyways. His gray tunic was torn at the shoulder, soaked through with a mixture of cold rainwater and his own blood.

In his arms, he held a bundle of ragged blankets. Inside that bundle was Mia, his seven-year-old daughter. Her small face was smudged with dirt and coal dust, her wide brown eyes staring up at him with a mixture of terror and absolute trust. She didn't cry. She had learned early in life that crying in the lower districts only drew the wrong kind of attention.

"Hold on to me, sweetheart," Arthur whispered, his voice cracking from exhaustion. "Just a little further."

Behind them, the rhythmic, heavy thud of iron-toed boots echoed against the brick walls. The City Guard was closing in. Arthur wasn’t a criminal by choice. He was a father desperate to save his dying wife, Clara. In the lower districts, medicine was a luxury reserved for the merchant guilds and highborn officials. When Clara fell ill with the creeping rot, a lung disease born from the factory smoke, Arthur had begged the guild masters for an advance on his meager wages. They had laughed him out of the estate.

Desperation drives good men to dark places. Arthur had broken into the district apothecary, not to steal gold, but to take the rare life-saving elixir his wife so desperately needed. But the guards had been waiting. They had ambushed him, and in the chaos, he had barely escaped with his life, fleeing back to their dilapidated tenement only to find Clara taking her final, agonizing breaths.

Before she passed, Clara had pressed a small, cold object into Arthur's hand and whispered a frantic directive: “Take Mia. Go to the High Court. Find the one who sits upon the ivory bench. Show her this. She will save you.”

Arthur hadn't understood. He didn't have time to understand. Clara’s eyes had gone glassy, her hand falling limp. Before he could even grieve, the guards had battered down his front door. He had grabbed Mia, grabbed the small object, and run into the night.

Now, cornered at the dead end of a blind alley, Arthur turned around to face his pursuers. Five heavily armored guards stepped into the dim light of the gas lamp, their swords drawn.

"Yield, thief," the lead guard barked, his face hidden behind a cold steel visor. "There is no escape for your kind."

Arthur shielded Mia with his body, his knuckles turning white as he braced for the impact. He looked down at his daughter, her innocent face looking back up at him. He knew he couldn't win a fight against five armed men. He fell to his knees, his hands held high, surrendering not for his own life, but to ensure they wouldn't strike down the child in his arms.
