Chapter 7 - The Cellular Secret

The confrontation at the gala forced Evelyn’s hand. Late that night, inside the heavily guarded sanctuary of her private study, she called Arthur and Mia to her desk. The air was thick with the scent of old parchment and the sweet, lingering aroma of the “Ne Pami” balm.

"It is time you know the truth about what killed Clara, and why that box is so dangerous," Evelyn said, her voice trembling with a vulnerability Arthur had never seen before.

She opened the small tin box. The iridescent, silver-glowing ointment inside seemed to hum with a faint, unnatural vitality.

"This is not a mere herbal remedy," Evelyn whispered. "Twenty-five years ago, Oakhaven’s alchemists discovered a deep underground vein of living mineral beneath the lower districts. They called it the Celestial Core. This balm was synthesized from it. It possesses the power of rapid cellular regeneration. It can mend bones, cure diseases, and yes... it could restore my legs."

Arthur frowned, a horrible realization dawning on him. "If the city has this, why are thousands dying of the creeping rot in the slums every year? Why did Clara have to die?"

"Because of greed," Evelyn spat, her eyes flashing with rage. "The High Council, led by Sterling’s family, realized the mineral vein was finite. If they used it to cure the masses, it would be depleted in years. So, they classified it as a state secret. They chose to let the lower district choke on the factory smoke while they hoarded the Core for themselves to prolong their own lives."

Evelyn looked at Mia, her eyes filling with tears. "Clara didn't just run away because of love, Arthur. She found out about the Council's plan to intentionally poison the lower district’s water supply to keep the population from growing too large. She stole this single tin of the prototype balm and fled to find a way to replicate it, to save the people. Sterling didn't hunt you because you broke into a common apothecary, Arthur. He hunted you because he realized Clara's daughter had returned with the missing piece of the puzzle."

Mia looked at the glowing silver paste, then reached out her small hand, gently touching Evelyn’s withered knee. "Grandma... if this can fix you, why haven't you used it yet?"

Evelyn smiled sadly, placing her hand over Mia’s. "Because, my sweet child, if I use it on myself, the Council will know the balm is real, and they will confiscate it. I am saving it for a moment when its revelation can destroy them completely."
