Chapter 14 - The Final Strike

The silver combat blade flashed in the pale moonlight as Viktor Kozlov slashed upward toward the dog’s exposed throat.

Atlas reacted with terrifying combat instinct, releasing his hold on Kozlov's shoulder and clamping his powerful jaws directly onto the mercenary’s wrist.

The sound of fracturing bone cracked cleanly through the mountain silence.

Kozlov let out a roar of agonized fury as the heavy hunting knife slipped from his shattered fingers, clattering uselessly into the gravel.

Kozlov used his immense weight to roll over, slamming Atlas against the stone foundation of the cabin with brutal force.

Atlas let out a sharp whimper of pain, but his jaws refused to release their iron grip.

Elena crossed the yard in three explosive strides, driving the butt of her empty shotgun straight into Kozlov’s jaw.

The mercenary leader crashed backward into the dirt, stunned and bleeding heavily from his lip.

Atlas stood over him instantly, planting two heavy front paws onto Kozlov’s chest, his bared teeth inches from the man's throat.

Kozlov stared up into the animal's blazing golden eyes, feeling the warm, ragged breath of the war dog against his skin.

The mercenary leader slowly raised his remaining good hand into the air, surrendering entirely.

"Call off the beast," Kozlov panted, his breath whistling through broken teeth.

"Call him off, Brooks... I yield."

"Atlas, hold," Elena commanded, her voice steady and lethal.

Atlas ceased his growl, but did not move an inch from Kozlov’s chest, his eyes locked onto the man’s jugular.

Marcus stepped out from the smoke-filled cabin, his hands covered in soot, holding the recovered USB drive in one hand and his sidearm in the other.

"The two mercenaries on the road are disarmed and secured to the chassis of their own vehicle," Marcus reported, breathing hard.

"The third ran into the woods when he saw Kozlov go down."

Elena leaned down, retrieving the fallen combat knife from the dirt and tossing it far into the hemlock brush.

"It’s over, Kozlov," Elena said, looking down at the mercenary commander with cold contempt.

"Arthur Vance is in federal custody."

"Conrad Mercer is facing twenty charges of treason."

"And Daniel Reeves’ ledger has already been transmitted to the Department of Justice."

Kozlov let out a bloody, bitter laugh from the dirt.

"You think this ends with Vance and Mercer?" Kozlov whispered, his voice trembling from shock.

"They were just the buyers and sellers, Brooks."

"The syndicate has roots in three foreign defense ministries."

"They will hunt you, that old woman, and that dog to the ends of the earth."

"Let them come," Elena replied without a fraction of hesitation.

"They couldn't kill Daniel in that trench, and they couldn't kill Atlas on this mountain."

"Every time they send someone like you, another piece of their rotten empire gets torn down."

From the valley below, the unmistakable sound of multiple military turbine engines vibrated through the crisp mountain air.

Two black MH-60 Black Hawk helicopters cleared the ridge line, their searchlights cutting through the canopy and bathing the clearing in brilliant illumination.

The insignias on the fuselages were clear: United States Army Special Operations Command, flying under the personal authorization of Secretary Robert Hale.

Rappelling ropes dropped from the open cabin doors, and twelve heavily armed elite soldiers descended to the ground, securing the perimeter in seconds.

The lead operator approached Elena, rendering a crisp, professional salute.

"Major Brooks, Secretary Hale sent us to secure the package and provide high-value escort."

"The Secretary said to tell you that the secondary partition decrypted successfully."

"Federal warrants have been issued for every foreign operative named in Daniel Reeves’ files."

Elena returned the salute, feeling the immense weight of three long, agonizing years finally lift from her shoulders.

"Take this man into custody," Elena directed, gesturing toward Kozlov.

"And send a medic inside to help Sergeant Reeves’ mother out of the storm cellar."

Atlas stepped off Kozlov’s chest, trotting calmly back to Elena’s side and pressing his flank against her leg brace.

Elena ran her hand over his muscular back, checking for wounds, finding only bruises and tired muscles.

He was unbroken.

He was victorious.

As the special forces team secured the prisoners and led Evelyn up into the safety of the clearing, the first rays of dawn broke across the Blue Ridge peaks.

The gold and amber light touched Daniel’s framed portrait in Evelyn’s arms, making the bronze service medals glint brightly in the sun.

Elena looked toward the eastern horizon, feeling a profound sense of closure settle deep into her bones.

The battle was finally over.

The brothers had been avenged.
