Chapter 12 - The Prosecutor’s Files and the Final Signature

Ten minutes later, the heavy oak doors of the grand study swung open, and Arthur Vance escorted a tall, sharp-featured man in a tailored camel-hair overcoat into the room.

Behind him walked two federal marshals carrying heavy leather briefcases.

Marcus Vance—a senior federal prosecutor known for dismantling Wall Street white-collar syndicates with surgical precision—stopped in the center of the Persian rug, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses.

“Good evening, Mr. Romano. Ms. Ellis,” Marcus said smoothly, offering a polite, businesslike nod.

“I apologize for the late hour, but federal logistics rarely operate on a standard nine-to-five schedule.”

Adrien remained standing by the mahogany desk, his arms crossed over his chest, his posture radiating an absolute, chilling authority.

“Prosecutors don't usually hand-deliver indictments to private residences unless they want something or they’re trying to cut a deal behind closed doors, Mr. Vance,” Adrien stated flatly.

“Let’s skip the pleasantries. What does the Justice Department want with Matteo’s remains?”

Marcus smiled faintly, opening one of the leather briefcases handed to him by the marshals and pulling out a thick stack of certified federal documents.

“The Justice Department wants a clean transition of maritime freight and distribution assets in New York Harbor, Mr. Romano,” Marcus said, laying the papers out on the desk.

“When we dismantled Matteo’s underground network, we recovered several encrypted hard drives containing records of illegal kickbacks, political bribes, and tax evasion schemes that implicate half the city council and three major shipping conglomerates.”

Adrien looked down at the documents without touching them.

“And?”

“And the federal government is prepared to classify those hard drives as classified national security assets and seal them permanently,” Marcus continued, his eyes locking onto Adrien’s.

“Provided the Romano distribution network formally enters into a long-term logistics partnership with the federal port authority to secure domestic supply chains against foreign cartels.”

Clara stepped forward, her sharp analytical mind instantly grasping the strategic implications of the prosecutor’s offer.

“In plain English, Mr. Vance,” Clara said, her voice cutting cleanly through the air.

“You want Adrien to act as the primary oversight authority for New York shipping security, effectively legalizing and legitimizing his entire distribution empire under federal sanction.”

Marcus turned his gaze toward Clara, a flicker of genuine professional respect crossing his features.

“Precisely, Ms. Ellis. The federal government lacks the manpower to police the docks the way the Romano family can. We provide the legal immunity and the federal seal; you provide the absolute control.”

Adrien stared at the federal documents for a long, silent moment.

For twelve years, the Romano name had operated in the gray areas between legitimate business and underworld survival—a shadow empire constantly dodging federal scrutiny and rival syndicate warfare.

Now, with a single signature, the state was offering to enshrine his authority into law, transforming him from a targeted syndicate boss into an untouchable corporate patriarch.

He looked over at Clara.

She gave him a subtle, encouraging nod—not out of ambition for power or wealth, but because she knew what it meant for their future, for Mia, and for the sanctuary they had built together.

Adrien reached out, picked up a heavy gold-plated fountain pen from the desk, and signed his name at the bottom of the master agreement with smooth, unhesitating strokes.

“Done,” Adrien said, sliding the pen back onto the desk.

Marcus Vance looked at the signature, folded the documents into the briefcase, and closed the latches with a sharp click.

“Pleasure doing business with you, Mr. Romano,” Marcus said, offering his hand.

Adrien didn't shake it.

He simply pointed toward the door.

“Arthur will show you out.”
