Chapter 8 - The Breach of the Vault Corridor

Down in the sub-basement vaults of the Manhattan Trust building, the standoff between the two estranged brothers had reached a boiling point.

Matteo stood holding the detonator, his thumb resting dangerously close to the primary trigger button, a manic grin stretching across his face as he watched Adrien struggle with the impossible choice between his empire and his new family.

“What’s the matter, little brother?” Matteo taunted, his voice echoing off the concrete.

“Cat got your tongue? Where’s all that legendary Romano ruthlessness now? You used to tear men apart for looking at you the wrong way in the docks. And now you’re willing to hand over a billion-dollar empire just for a maid and a bastard child?”

Adrien’s expression remained terrifyingly calm.

Beneath his black overcoat, his fingers twitched near the grip of his Beretta, calculating the precise microsecond required to draw, aim, and fire before Matteo’s thumb could depress the switch.

“You always mistook cruelty for strength, Matteo,” Adrien said quietly, his voice cutting through the damp air like a blade.

“That’s why our father left you out of the primary ledgers. That’s why Isabella left you to rot in Europe. And that’s why you’re standing in a cold basement holding a plastic toy while I control every shipping lane from here to Boston.”

Matteo’s smile vanished instantly.

A dark, murderous flush crept up his neck, and his thumb tightened over the detonator button.

“You arrogant son of a bitch,” Matteo hissed, his voice pitching upward in rage.

“I’ll show you who’s holding the toy—!”

Before Matteo’s thumb could complete the downward press, the heavy iron security gate at the far end of the vault corridor shrieked in protest.

CRASH.

The reinforced steel gate was violently blown inward by a localized breaching charge, sending a shockwave of white smoke and flying debris roaring down the narrow hallway.

Matteo stumbled backward, blinded by the smoke, his finger slipping off the primary trigger.

Adrien didn't hesitate for a fraction of a second.

With blinding, supernatural speed, his Beretta cleared leather.

Bang.

The single gunshot cracked through the underground vault like a thunderclap, striking the concrete floor a fraction of an inch from Matteo’s right boot, shattering the stone and sending him crashing to his knees in sheer terror.

From the billow of smoke at the end of the corridor, heavy tactical boots marched in rhythmic unison.

Arthur Vance led the entry team, his submachine gun raised, flanked by four elite security operatives.

And right behind them, stepping through the clearing smoke with a fierce, unwavering determination in her eyes, was Clara Ellis.
