Chapter 12 - Shadows of the Bloodline

The armored SUV cut through the blinding snowstorm along the mountain pass, heading south at eighty miles per hour.

Inside the heated cabin, Frank tended to Claire with an intravenous saline bag hooked to the interior grab handle.

Claire was bundled under two heavy thermal blankets, her face color slowly returning as the toxins drained from her system.

Sophie sat beside her sister, holding Claire’s cold fingers between both of her palms.

For the first time in twenty-six years, the two identical faces looked at each other in the clear light of day.

It was like looking into a mirror that had lived a completely different, sorrowful lifetime.

Claire managed a faint, radiant smile, her hazel eyes glistening with fresh tears.

“You have Eleanor’s hands,” Claire whispered, her voice gaining strength.

“Gentle.”

“Steady.”

Sophie swallowed the knot in her throat, grief over Eleanor’s brutal murder tightening her chest.

“Eleanor died tonight, Claire.”

“Matteo Rossi sent hitmen to our apartment in Queens.”

Claire closed her eyes, two single tears cutting clean tracks through the soot on her cheeks.

“Eleanor was the only person in this city who showed me true mercy,” Claire murmured.

“Three years ago, when I found the old adoption papers hidden in Vincent’s safe, I drove straight to Queens.”

“Eleanor met me at the door with a rolling pin in her hand, terrified that Vincent had sent killers for Sofia.”

Claire opened her eyes, looking directly at Nico, who was driving with lethal focus.

“Julian knew,” Claire said softly.

Nico’s hands tightened around the steering wheel until the leather groaned.

“Tell me about Julian,” Nico demanded, his voice thick with raw emotion.

“Julian loved me enough to defy his own father,” Claire explained, leaning her head back against the seat.

“When I found out that Sofia was alive, Julian helped me track the offshore accounts.”

“We discovered the truth about the Castiglione Trust.”

“My great-grandfather, Don Lorenzo Castiglione, despised the violence of the American syndicates.”

“In his will, he stipulated that if female twins were ever born to the family, the entire estate would be liquidated.”

“Eighty million dollars in real estate, shipping docks, and commercial trusts would be converted into an irrevocable public endowment.”

“The mob would be starved of its primary financial engine.”

Sophie listened, every piece of the puzzle falling into place with terrifying logic.

“So when we were born, Vincent Romano and Salvatore Castiglione joined forces to erase me,” Sophie said.

“Yes,” Claire nodded weakly.

“Vincent bribed the hospital administrator to declare Sofia dead at birth.”

“They gave Sofia to Eleanor with a sealed stipend, believing you would remain an anonymous baker’s daughter forever.”

“And Claire remained the single legal heiress, allowing Vincent to merge the two crime families through my marriage to Julian.”

Nico glanced into the rearview mirror, his jaw set like iron.

“And when Julian discovered the fraud three years ago?”

“Julian confronted Matteo Rossi,” Claire whispered, her voice trembling.

“Julian told Matteo that we were going to produce Sofia, trigger the trust dissolution, and leave the country for good.”

“Matteo couldn't allow that.”

“Matteo poisoned Julian’s drink at the marina and staged it as an overdose.”

“Then he cut the brake lines on my sedan.”

“When I survived the crash on Route 9, Salvatore pulled me from the wreck before the state police arrived.”

“Salvatore realized that if I died, the biometric locks on the offshore bank accounts would freeze permanently.”

“So they locked me in Saint Jude, keeping me chemically paralyzed so Matteo could drag me out once a year for a thumbprint scan.”

Sophie felt a wave of icy fury boil through her veins.

Her sister had been tortured in a medical dungeon for three years so greedy mobsters could siphon blood money.

Suddenly, the satellite communication console on the dashboard began beeping with frantic, high-priority alarm tones.

The encrypted channel opened, and the desperate voice of Captain Miller, head of security at Blackwood Lake, burst through the speaker.

“Boss! We are under heavy assault!”

Gunfire erupted over the radio, loud, sharp, and terrifyingly close.

“Matteo Rossi brought thirty men with tactical gear and armored breaching rams!”

“They bypassed the outer perimeter sensors!”

“They’re using heavy explosives on the reinforced security doors!”

Sophie lunged forward against the front seat, her heart nearly stopping in her chest.

“Ava!” Sophie screamed.

“Where is Ava?”

“We have the little girl secured in the subterranean panic vault beneath the library!” Miller shouted through the radio.

“But they’ve brought industrial thermite torches!”

“They’re cutting through the vault hinges right now!”

“Miller!” Nico roared into the microphone, his eyes flashing with murderous intent.

“Hold that line with your lives!”

“We are twenty minutes out!”

A violent explosion cut the transmission, plunging the cabin into static-filled silence.

Nico slammed his foot down on the gas pedal, the powerful V8 engine screaming as the armored SUV leaped forward across the snowy asphalt.

Claire grabbed Sophie’s hand with desperate, frantic terror.

“My baby,” Claire wept.

“Sofia… don't let them take my baby!”

Sophie squeezed her sister’s hand, her eyes burning with cold, lethal determination.

May you like

“Nobody touches Ava,” Sophie said, cocking her weapon in the darkness.

“Not while I’m breathing.”
