Chapter 13 - The Siege of Blackwood Lake

The iron gates of the Blackwood Lake estate lay twisted and blackened in the snow, blasted open by military-grade C4.
Flames were pouring from the guardhouse windows, casting a flickering orange glow across the pine trees.
Three heavy assault trucks were parked on the circular driveway in front of the cedar lodge.
The front oak doors had been ripped off their hinges, revealing a shattered foyer littered with spent brass casings and fallen guards.
Nico killed the headlights of the SUV two hundred yards down the driveway, coasting silently into the shadows of the carriage house.
“Frank, take the high-powered rifle and get onto the roof of the boathouse,” Nico whispered, his tactical instincts taking total command.
“Pick off their perimeter lookouts.”
“Sophie, stay with Claire in the vehicle.”
Claire sat up, her face pale but her gaze blazing with maternal fury.
“I am not staying in the car while Matteo Rossi has my daughter cornered like an animal,” Claire said, her voice trembling with steel.
Sophie looked at her identical sister.
They wore the same dark coats, possessed the exact same face, and moved with the same desperate urgency.
A brilliant, dangerous plan ignited in Sophie’s mind.
“Nico, listen to me,” Sophie said, grabbing his arm.
“Matteo thinks Claire is dead.”
“He thinks she burned in Saint Jude two hours ago.”
“If Claire and I appear from two different entrances at the exact same time, his men will panic.”
“They think they’re fighting ghosts.”
Nico looked at the two sisters, recognizing the psychological terror that two identical heiresses could unleash on superstitious mobsters.
“Frank,” Nico commanded softly.
“Begin the sweep.”
A muffled crack echoed from the boathouse roof as Frank’s rifle took down the rear truck driver.
A second shot dropped the patio lookout into the snow.
Nico drew two Kimber .45s from beneath his trench coat, stepping out into the freezing night like an angel of death.
Sophie and Claire moved swiftly behind him, entering through the shattered glass of the conservatory.
Inside, the scent of cordite, burning pine wood, and spilled blood was overwhelming.
From the lower basement level beneath the library came the screeching hiss of an industrial thermite torch.
Matteo Rossi’s raspy voice echoed up the grand staircase, laced with triumphant malice.
“Cut the secondary bolts!” Matteo barked at his engineers.
“Drag the little brat out!”
“Salvatore wants her on a private jet to the Bahamas before dawn!”
Sophie crept down the marble stairs, staying low against the carved mahogany banister.
At the bottom of the basement landing, four mercenaries were operating a high-temperature cutting torch against the heavy vault door.
Matteo Rossi stood in the center of the vault room, holding a gold-plated revolver, a cigar clenched between his yellow teeth.
Claire slipped down the secondary service corridor, appearing at the opposite doorway of the chamber.
The dim emergency lights flickered, casting eerie double shadows against the concrete walls.
Claire stepped into the doorway, her voice ringing out like a judgment from the afterlife.
“Matteo.”
Matteo froze, the cigar dropping from his lips onto the floor.
He spun around, his eyes widening in pure, paralyzed horror.
“Claire?” Matteo stammered, his face draining of all blood.
“No… you burned… Salvatore confirmed the facility was leveled!”
Before Matteo could raise his revolver, Sophie stepped out from the main staircase directly on his other flank.
“You should have checked the ashes, Matteo,” Sophie said, her ceramic pistol leveled at his temple.
Matteo’s head whipped between the two women, his mind shattering under the impossible sight of two living Claires.
“Two of them…” Matteo whimpered, stumbling backward into his own men.
“Jesus Mary… there are two of them!”
The mercenaries hesitated, their discipline completely broken by the supernatural confusion.
That single split-second of hesitation was all Nico Romano needed.
Nico rounded the corner like a thunderstorm, firing with terrifying, surgical precision.
Four shots roared in less than two seconds.
All four torch operators collapsed onto the concrete, their weapons clattering away harmlessly.
Matteo lunged for his dropped gold revolver, but Nico was already upon him.
Nico’s heavy combat boot crushed Matteo’s wrist against the floorboards with a sickening crunch.
Matteo screamed in agony as Nico snatched the gold gun and pressed the freezing barrel of his own .45 against Matteo’s forehead.
“Open the vault,” Nico ordered, his voice vibrating with absolute lethality.
Frank, who had followed down the stairs, disengaged the manual security override on the vault door.
The heavy steel door swung open with a slow, heavy creak.
Cowering in the corner beneath a shelf of silver bullion sat five-year-old Ava, clutching her stuffed rabbit to her chest.
Her hazel eyes were wide with terror, but when she saw the figures in the doorway, her small face transformed into pure wonder.
Claire fell to her knees at the threshold, opening her trembling arms.
“Ava!” Claire cried, her heart tearing open in her chest.
“My baby!”
Ava looked from Claire to Sophie, then back to Claire.
She saw the tears streaming down her mother’s face, recognizing the exact cadence of the voice that had sung her to sleep as an infant.
“Mommy!” Ava screamed, dropping the rabbit and sprinting across the floor into Claire’s waiting embrace.
Claire buried her face in her daughter’s dark curls, sobbing so hard that her entire body shook violently.
Sophie knelt beside them, wrapping her arms around both of them, tears finally streaming down her own face.
Ava reached up with one tiny hand, touching Claire’s cheek, and with the other hand, touching Sophie’s neck where the crescent moon lay.
“Both mommies,” Ava whispered softly, safe at last between the two sisters.
Nico looked down at the weeping family, the ice in his heart melting away into fierce, unyielding protection.
He looked down at Matteo Rossi writhing in pain on the bloody floor.

“Get up, Matteo,” Nico said, his voice cold enough to split stone.
“You have an appointment with the Family Council.”
