Chapter 4 - MIDNIGHT TERROR AT THE APARTMENT DOOR

At precisely midnight, the illusory peace of my apartment was shattered by a brutal, violent assault on my front door. Bang. Bang. Bang. The sound echoed down the quiet residential hallway like a series of gunshots, hard enough to rattle the security chain loose and send vibrations straight through the floorboards. "Mara!" Celeste screamed at the top of her lungs, her voice stripped of all its high-society elegance, reduced to a desperate, unhinged screech. "Open this door right now, you ungrateful, malicious little bitch!" I didn’t flinch. I stood barefoot in the center of my darkened living room, wearing a simple oversized cotton t-shirt and loose lounge pants, watching the brass doorknob shake violently back and forth as she rattled it with both hands. "I know you're in there! Open this door before I call the police and have you arrested for grand larceny and corporate sabotage!" Celeste’s voice was breaking now, pitching up into an ugly, hysterical wail that brought a couple of curious neighbors' doors open down the hall. I heard Mrs. Higgins, our elderly retired neighbor, pop her head out and murmur something sharply, causing Celeste to snap, "Mind your own damn business, old woman, or I'll have you evicted too!" For the first time all night, a genuine, warm smile spread across my face. It wasn’t a smile of malice, but rather the deep, profound satisfaction of watching an arrogant tyrant realize her entire kingdom was built on quicksand. I walked slowly toward the front door, stopping just a few inches away from the thick wooden panel. I could hear my father breathing heavily on the other side, his voice sounding small, raspy, and utterly defeated as he tried to calm his wife down. "Celeste, stop it, stop screaming, banging on her door isn't going to fix—" "Shut up, Richard! This is all your fault!" she shrieked, slamming her fist against the wood one last time. "You and your pathetic, worthless daughter have ruined everything! Do you know what the board is saying? The operating accounts are locked! The merchant terminals are spitting out declined slips! The catering vendors are refusing to unload the food trucks for tomorrow's brunch because our corporate credit cards were just bounced by the central bank!" I leaned my forehead gently against the cool wooden door, listening to the absolute collapse of their carefully curated illusion of wealth and status. They had spent years treating me like an unwanted ghost in my own home, pushing me out of family portraits, erasing my mother's portraits from the executive lounge, and acting as if the Halston name belonged exclusively to them. Now, reality had come knocking, and unlike me, they had nowhere left to run.
