Chapter 8 - JULIAN'S ENTRANCE AND THE EXPOSURE OF EMBEZZLEMENT

Before Celeste could launch into another screaming tirade, the heavy mahogany boardroom doors banged open with a deafening crash. Everyone jumped, turning around to see Julian Halston—Celeste's twenty-six-year-old golden-boy son—stumbling into the room wearing a rumpled designer tracksuit, smelling heavily of stale tequila and expensive cologne. His eyes were bloodshot, his hair was messy, and he was staring wildly at his cell phone screen, which was flashing an alert from the hotel's mobile banking app. "Mom! What the hell is going on with the corporate accounts?" Julian yelled, waving his phone frantically in the air as he marched straight toward the head of the table. "I tried to use the black card to settle my VIP tab down at the lounge for last night's after-party, and the terminal rejected it three damn times! The concierge just told me my room service privileges have been permanently revoked!" He stopped dead in his tracks as he finally noticed me standing calmly by the window, watching him like a scientist observing a particularly pathetic lab specimen under a microscope. Julian’s face twisted into an ugly sneer. "Oh, look. The office drone decided to show up. Did you cause this, Mara? You little psycho, what did you do to the hotel systems?" I didn't raise my voice. I didn't blink. I simply reached back into my leather portfolio, pulled out a second, much thinner manila envelope, and tossed it across the table directly toward Julian's chest. The envelope hit him squarely and dropped to the carpeted floor, spilling out a dozen printed bank statements and corporate expense receipts. "Pick them up, Julian," I said coldly. "Read every single line item. See how long you can pretend you're a billionaire playboy before you realize you're actually a broke criminal." Julian sneered, bending down lazily to scoop up the papers. He glanced at the top page, and the smug, arrogant smirk on his face vanished in a single microsecond. The color drained from his skin so fast he looked like he was about to pass out on the spot. "What... what is this?" Julian stammered, his fingers trembling as he shuffled through the pages of unauthorized luxury car leases, high-end jewelry store charges in Paris, and massive cash withdrawals funneled directly into his personal offshore crypto accounts—all illegally billed to the Halston Meridian corporate expense ledger over the past eighteen months. "That," I said, stepping forward until I was standing right in front of him, looking down into his terrified, darting eyes, "is a detailed forensic audit of the forty-two thousand dollars a month you embezzled from the hotel's maintenance budget to fund your gambling debts and your girlfriend's luxury shopping sprees. Arthur Pendelton has already certified copies of these transactions. We have your digital signature on every single unauthorized wire transfer." Celeste lunged forward, grabbing Julian's arm as if she could physically shield him from the overwhelming mountain of legal evidence piling up around them. "Lies! All of these are vicious lies fabricated by this jealous little bitch to destroy our family!" she screamed, her voice cracking into a desperate, jagged sob. "Richard, tell her! Tell them you authorized Julian to use those funds!" My father didn't move. He kept his head bowed, his hands locked together on the table, refusing to look at either of them. The silence in the boardroom was absolute, heavy, and completely suffocating. Arthur Pendelton slowly pushed his glasses up his nose, closed the leather-bound folder with a definitive snap, and looked directly at the panicking mother and son. "Mrs. Halston," Arthur said, his voice flat, cold, and dripping with professional contempt, "misappropriation of corporate funds exceeding one million dollars from an irrevocable family trust is not a family dispute. It is a federal felony offense. And given that Miss Halston is now the sole legal trustee and primary beneficiary of this entire corporate entity, she holds the absolute discretionary power to press immediate criminal charges or refer these documents directly to the federal prosecutor's office by noon today."
