Chapter 2 - The Serpent’s Strike: Cruelty in the Grand Ballroom

Victoria lowered her champagne flute, her gaze sharpening into a laser-focused glare directed squarely at Margaret and the young woman attending her. The silence in the ballroom was absolute, heavy with the collective breath of hundreds of elite guests who knew better than to interrupt a moment of Sterling family theater. Victoria descended the first few steps of the grand staircase, her designer heels clicking rhythmically against the stone, each step echoing like a gavel falling in a courtroom. She stopped just a few paces from Margaret’s wheelchair, towering over the elderly matriarch with an expression of supreme condescension.

"Look at you," Victoria sneered, her voice dripping with venom as she addressed her grandmother. "Sitting there, trembling like a frightened animal, waiting for someone to pity you. You’ve become a pathetic burden to this family, Margaret. A useless relic holding back the future of Sterling Enterprises."

Margaret’s lips parted slightly, her eyes welling with a sudden, painful vulnerability. She raised a frail, shaking hand in a defensive gesture, as if trying to shield herself from the verbal onslaught. "Victoria... please," Margaret whispered, her voice cracking with apparent weakness. "There is no need for such cruelty... not in front of our guests... not tonight."

"Guests?" Victoria laughed, a sharp, piercing sound devoid of any warmth. "These people aren't guests, grandmother—they are witnesses to your obsolescence. They are here to watch the old guard finally step aside and make room for true strength." Victoria’s eyes darted viciously toward Elena, who stood silently holding the mahogany cane. "And as for you, you incompetent, pathetic excuse for a servant—step away from her. You are utterly useless, a waste of space in this house. You don't even know how to stand straight, let alone care for someone of actual importance."

Elena did not flinch. She maintained her posture, her gaze meeting Victoria’s furious, dilated pupils with an unsettling, icy calm. This unresponsiveness enraged Victoria further. Accustomed to people cowering before her wealth and wrath, the maid's unwavering composure felt like a personal insult, a direct challenge to her supremacy.

"Did you hear me, you helpless old woman?" Victoria snapped, turning her vicious attention back to Margaret while pointing a manicured finger directly at the matriarch’s face. "You’re finished! Do you hear me? Your reign is over! Leave this house tonight, or I will have security drag you out into the streets where you belong!"

The crowd gasped. Whispers rippled through the ballroom like wind through dry leaves. Even among the ruthlessly ambitious elite, publicly threatening and humiliating the founding matriarch of the family crossed a line that few dared to imagine. Yet, no one stepped forward. Fear of Victoria’s rising power and the vast financial influence she wielded paralyzed the onlookers into cowardly silence. Victoria stood basking in the terrified compliance of the room, her chest heaving with adrenaline, her victory seeming complete. She raised her hand once more, preparing to deliver the final, devastating verbal blow that would shatter whatever dignity Margaret had left.

Margaret’s hand remained raised in that fragile, pleading posture, her finger trembling as she pointed slightly toward the staircase, her breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps. The drama had reached its fever pitch, the air so dense with malice and tension that it felt almost impossible to breathe. Victoria’s smile widened into a predatory grin, her hand drawing back as if to gesture dismissively toward the exit doors, completely blind to the towering shadow that had just emerged on the grand staircase landing behind her.
