Chapter 13 - THE NORTHERN WOODS CONFRONTATION

The hum of the overhead floodlight was the only sound in the freezing night air.

Emily stood paralyzed on the wet gravel path, her fingers clenched inside the pockets of her trench coat, her breath turning into small clouds of white vapor.

Logan didn't rush toward her.

He walked slowly, deliberately, his heavy boots crunching against the stones with measured, deliberate steps.

He stopped three feet away from her, towering over her in the harsh white glare, his face carved into hard lines of suppressed rage.

"Did you think the perimeter sensors were decorative?" Logan asked, his voice dangerously low, almost a whisper.

"Did you think my security team wouldn't notice a door opening on the service level at three in the morning?"

Emily swallowed hard, her throat burning with sudden tears.

"Let me go, Logan," she whispered, her voice shaking but resolute.

"I am not a prisoner here. I have a right to leave."

"A right to leave?" Logan repeated, a harsh, humorless laugh escaping his lips.

"You walked out into an open forest in the middle of the night wearing a light coat, carrying a waterproof case with millions of dollars in offshore routing numbers, trying to escape a syndicate that currently has a contract out on your life."

He took another step closer, closing the distance between them until she could feel the heat radiating off his broad chest.

"That isn't escaping, Emily. That is committing suicide."

"At least my child would die outside of this cursed house!" Emily cried out, the dam finally breaking.

Tears streamed down her cold cheeks as she looked up into his fierce, unyielding eyes.

"You think I don't see what this place is? You think I’m blind to the blood on those walls? Every person in this family is a monster or a victim!"

She clutched her stomach with one hand, her voice cracking with raw, unbearable pain.

"Vincent tried to kill me. Someone inside this house leaked my location. And when my baby is born, you people will turn him into a soldier, a killer, or a target!"

Logan’s expression didn't soften.

If anything, his jaw tightened even harder, the muscle in his cheek ticking violently.

"You think I’m going to let them touch him?" Logan growled, his voice dropping an octave, ringing with absolute, primal authority.

"You think I survived twenty years of turf wars just to let someone harm my brother’s blood?"

"You couldn't save Daniel!" Emily screamed, the words cutting through the night air like a knife.

Logan flinched.

For a fraction of a second, something broke behind his amber eyes—a flash of pure, agonizing grief that he kept locked away in the darkest corners of his soul.

He stepped forward, grabbing her upper arms with his large hands.

His grip was firm, unyielding, yet careful not to bruise her skin.

"No," Logan said, his voice thick and rough, his face mere inches from hers.

"I couldn't save Daniel because Daniel thought he could fight Vincent alone. He thought he was smarter than the wolves."

Logan shook his head slowly, his eyes drilling into her soul.

"You are not alone, Emily. As long as I am breathing, nobody touches you. Nobody touches this child."

"And when you're not breathing?" Emily whispered, her voice breaking completely.

"How many enemies do you have, Logan? How many men want to put a bullet through your head? What happens to us when you walk out that door and never come back?"

Logan went completely still.

The fierce anger in his face vanished, replaced by a heavy, profound silence.

He slowly lowered his hands from her arms, taking a half-step back.

He looked at her standing there in the cold rain—small, shivering, fiercely protective of the tiny life growing inside her—and for the first time since they had met, the cold, lethal enforcer completely disappeared.

"Then you take the money," Logan said quietly, his voice barely audible over the wind rustling through the pine trees.

"You take Daniel’s Zurich account, you take the flash drive, and you run to the other side of the world where nobody has ever heard of the Russos."

Emily stared at him, stunned.

"What?"

"I didn't come out here to lock you back in your room, Emily," Logan confessed, looking down at his boots before raising his eyes to meet hers.

"When Marcus woke me up and said the perimeter alarm was triggered by the western gate... my heart stopped. Not because you were escaping with the ledger."

He reached out, his calloused fingertips lightly brushing a wet lock of hair away from her forehead.

"Because I realized that if you walked out of my life tonight, I would spend the rest of my days burning this city to the ground just to find you."

Emily’s breath caught in her throat.

The cold night air seemed to vanish, replaced by an intense, overwhelming heat that radiated between them.

She looked into his amber eyes and saw the terrifying truth she had been running from all evening.

She wasn't just running from the Russo family.

She was running from him.

She was running from the way her heart skipped a beat every time he walked into a room.

She was running from the dangerous, consuming feeling of safety she felt every time his arms wrapped around her.

"Logan..." she breathed, her voice trembling.

"Come back inside," Logan murmured, extending his hand toward her, palm open, offering a choice instead of a command.

"Let me protect you. Not because it’s my duty to the family bloodline."

He looked straight into her eyes, his voice steady and absolute.

"Because you are the only real thing I have left in this dark world."

Emily looked down at his large, scarred hand.

She thought about the cold apartment on 4th Street, the overdue rent, the empty pantry, and the terrifying void where Daniel used to be.

Then she looked up at the man standing before her—the monster to his enemies, the protector to her.

Slowly, deliberately, Emily slid her cold fingers into his hand.
