Chapter 15 - CROWN OF THORNS AND ASHES

The sun was high in the afternoon sky when the three armored black SUVs pulled away from the North Valley townhouse, heading back toward the Russo estate on Ridge Road.

In the backseat of the lead vehicle, Martha Gable sat handcuffed between two armed security guards, her head bowed in terrified silence.

Logan drove the vehicle himself, his eyes fixed on the rearview mirror, watching Emily sitting quietly in the passenger seat.

Emily rested one hand over her stomach, looking out the window as the familiar streets of the city blurred past.

Her life had changed irrevocably in less than five days.

She had walked into the Russo estate as an invisible, desperate maid running from eviction notices and empty bank accounts.

Now, she was returning to that fortress as the mother of the future dynasty, guarded by an army, feared by her enemies, and bound to the most dangerous man in the city.

When the SUVs passed through the iron security gates and pulled up to the grand entrance of the mansion, Eleanor was already waiting on the stone steps, flanked by four state troopers.

Logan parked the vehicle, killed the engine, and stepped out, walking around to open Emily’s door.

He extended his large, calloused hand, offering it to her with quiet, unwavering reverence.

Emily looked at his hand, then up into his amber eyes.

All the fear, all the hesitation, all the lingering doubt that had tormented her soul since the night in the ballroom finally melted away.

She placed her hand in his.

Logan wrapped his fingers securely around hers, helping her step out of the SUV onto the historic stones of the courtyard.

As they walked up the steps toward the massive oak double doors, Eleanor turned her sharp, regal gaze upon them.

"Martha Gable is in the basement holding cells," Eleanor announced, her voice carrying across the courtyard.

"She has confessed to everything. She admitted that Vincent knew about the pregnancy six days before Daniel’s car went off the cliff."

Eleanor stepped forward, stopping directly in front of Emily.

The old matriarch reached out, her trembling fingers gently touching Emily’s cheek, the same way she had touched Daniel when he was a boy.

"You survived his traps, child," Eleanor whispered, her voice thick with emotion.

"You brought my grandson’s light back into this dark house."

Eleanor turned her gaze to Logan, seeing the way his massive frame positioned itself protectively beside Emily, seeing the absolute devotion burning in his amber eyes.

"The board of directors has convened an emergency session for tomorrow morning," Eleanor declared, her voice ringing with the finality of an iron law.

"We will officially present the paternity certification, ratify the child’s inheritance trust, and announce the formal betrothal of Emily Carter to the head of the Russo dynasty."

Emily’s breath caught in her throat.

She turned her head quickly to look at Logan.

Logan didn't look surprised.

In fact, a faint, rare, genuine smile touched the corners of his lips—a smile that softened the harsh lines of his scar and warmed his dark eyes completely.

"How does that sound to you, Emily?" Logan asked softly, his thumb tracing the back of her hand.

"A betrothal?" Emily whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"You didn't even ask me out on a normal date."

Logan chuckled, a deep, resonant sound that echoed off the stone pillars of the mansion.

"Normal dates are for ordinary people, Miss Carter," Logan murmured, leaning down slightly until his lips brushed the shell of her ear.

"And you are carrying a king."

Emily looked from Logan’s face to the sprawling, impenetrable stone fortress of the estate, then down to the tiny life stirring safely beneath her palm.

The war was not over.

The syndicate in Baltimore was still watching from the shadows.

Enemies would still try to reach through the gates.

But as she stood beside the most dangerous man in the city, with the matriarch of the dynasty holding her hand, Emily knew one absolute truth.

They weren't hiding anymore.
