Chapter 13 - The Blockade on the Palisades and the Senator's Ultimatum

By two o'clock that afternoon, a ferocious coastal fog rolled in from the Atlantic, blanketing the Hudson River in a dense, blinding grey shroud.

Four identical black armored Suburbans moved in tight tactical formation along the Palisades Interstate Parkway, heading north toward the state capital.

Mason sat in the front passenger seat of the second vehicle, his tactical radio constantly squawking with encrypted communications from his scout cars.

In the rear seat, Emma sat beside Rose Bellini, reviewing the physical legal binders that David Vance had printed and verified.

Rose held Emma’s left hand in hers, their matching crescent scars resting inches apart on the leather upholstery.

"Your mother was the fiercest woman I ever knew, Emma," Rose murmured, looking out into the swirling fog.

"When she was twelve, a rival crew tried to breach our family estate in Long Island."

"While the men were firing from the courtyard, Chiara locked her younger brothers in the vault, took Salvatore’s shotgun, and stood guard over the nursery door."

"She didn't shed a single tear until the police sirens arrived."

Emma looked down at the documents in her lap, feeling the heavy, inescapable weight of her mother’s blood pulsing through her veins.

"She never told me any of that, Grandmother," Emma whispered.

"She spent my childhood making pancakes on Saturday mornings and singing off-key to folk songs on the radio."

"She gave you the life she was denied," Rose said softly, squeezing Emma’s fingers.

"She took the poison of this empire and drank it herself so you could grow up clean."

"And now it is our duty to ensure that her sacrifice was not in vain."

Suddenly, the radio on Mason’s dashboard screamed with static.

"Lead vehicle to Command!" Dominic’s voice crackled through the speaker, tight with alarm.

"We have a massive obstruction two miles ahead near the Bear Mountain Bridge interchange!"

"State Police cruisers and private black tactical transports blocking all three northbound lanes!"

"They’ve set up a full containment perimeter with spike strips and concrete barricades!"

Mason grabbed the radio transmitter, his eyes narrowing into cold slits.

"Is it a legitimate highway patrol checkpoint, Dominic?" Mason demanded.

"Negative, Boss!" Dominic shouted back over the roar of engines.

"The cruisers are marked State Police, but the officers are wearing unmarked tactical armor without badge numbers!"

"They’re carrying selective-fire carbines and tactical riot shields!"

"It’s Sterling’s private security division operating under fraudulent state credentials!"

Before Mason could issue an evasive maneuver order, Mason’s satellite phone rang with an unlisted executive frequency.

Mason tapped the speakerphone button on the dashboard.

"Mason Bellini," a smooth, cultured, aristocratic voice spoke through the car's speakers.

The voice belonged to Senator Harrison Sterling, a man whose face had appeared on national news broadcasts for thirty years as the pillar of northeastern political nobility.

"Senator Sterling," Mason replied coldly, his hand gesturing for the driver to slow the convoy's speed.

"You are deploying state resources on a public parkway."

"That is quite an expensive display of desperation."

A low, patronizing chuckle sounded from the other end of the line.

"My dear Mason, when billions of dollars in sovereign maritime logistics are at stake, a few state troopers are a rounding error," Sterling said smoothly.

"You have your uncle’s bastard niece in that vehicle."

"You are carrying legal documents that threaten to disrupt the stability of our region’s most critical infrastructure."

"I cannot allow an uneducated catering waitress to inherit the keys to the eastern seaboard."

"She is Don Salvatore's granddaughter, Sterling," Mason warned, his voice vibrating with lethal intensity.

"And she holds the majority equity under law."

"Law is a construct written by men with power, Mason," Sterling countered, his tone turning sharply menacing.

"And right now, I hold all the power."

"Look around you, boy."

"I have the highway blocked."

"I have three tactical assault teams flanking your convoy from the tree line."

"And I have an emergency injunction signed by the Chief Justice of the State Appellate Court invalidating Salvatore’s trust due to suspected fraud."

"You will not reach Albany by five o'clock."

Sterling paused, his breath audible over the satellite link.

"However, I am a pragmatic businessman, Mason."

"I do not wish to wipe out the Bellini family in a public bloodbath on a state highway."

"Instruct the girl to step out of the vehicle."

"She will sign a formal release of the maritime shares, transferring them into my private logistics trust in exchange for fifty million dollars in tax-free bearer bonds."

"She walks away rich, you keep your suburban rackets, and Rose lives to see her seventy-fifth birthday."

"Refuse, and my contractors will engage your convoy with heavy anti-armor ordnance."

"Not a single person in those four vehicles will survive the next five minutes."

The line clicked dead.

Inside the armored SUV, the silence was suffocating, broken only by the low rumble of the engine idling on the highway shoulder.

Rose Bellini looked at Mason, her eyes burning with ancestral defiance.

"We do not negotiate with the dog who ordered Chiara’s murder, Mason," Rose stated, her voice unyielding.

Emma looked up from the documents, her face pale but her expression completely transformed.

"Mason," Emma said, leaning forward between the front bucket seats.

"Sterling said he has an injunction signed by the Appellate Court?"

"Yes," Mason replied, glancing back at her.

"Which means he expects us to take the highway straight into Albany to file the physical papers at the state capitol building."

"That was Julian's plan," Mason said.

Emma shook her head, a cold, brilliant smile breaking across her lips.

"Julian designed that plan twenty-five years ago, before the world went digital."

"Where is the master server that hosts the State Maritime Commission's executive filings?"

Mason blinked, his tactical instincts aligning with her thought process in an instant.

"Pier 44," Mason said, his voice dropping into pure awe.

"The Commission's central digital registry is housed in the historic Maritime Customs Building at Pier 44, directly across from our terminal."

"All filings can be certified digitally if uploaded directly to the local fiber-optic node inside the Customs terminal using Don Salvatore’s master physical security key."

Emma held up the heavy gold signet ring resting on her finger.

"Sterling thinks we're heading north to Albany," Emma said, her voice ringing with absolute clarity.

"He put his entire army on the Bear Mountain Bridge."

"Which means Pier 44 is completely wide open."

Mason looked at his driver, then grabbed the tactical radio with a fierce, wolfish grin.

"All units, tactical U-turn on my mark!" Mason roared into the transmitter.

"Blow the highway median, reverse formation, and head south to Pier 44!"

"We’re not going to Albany, gentlemen!"

"We’re taking the war straight to Harrison Sterling’s front door!"
